Can't access internet and firewall is down

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1764, Windows 7 Pro x64. I have Avast Internet Security plus MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, Hitman Pro and CCleaner.

About 1 - 2 months ago I began having trouble when I couldn't access one website; directv.com. I read everything I could find but no luck. Meanwhile
we had upgraded our internet from AT&T DSL to AT&T U-verse about two weeks ago. Then over the weekend our internet went down & I had to completely shut down the AT&T modem/router for a few minutes. After it came back up everything worked except for my laptop. I select the correct network connection but it shows as an Unidentified Network with no internet access. Avast reports it's firewall is down and I cannot start it. I don't receive a particular error message.

I have tried restoring the system using System Restore to two earlier restore points but the problem persists. I downloaded DDS from your website.

You guys helped me correct a malware problem back in 2012 so I immediately came here for help! Another thing is I had noticed a program I removed was back after System Restore so I attempted to remove it again. I received the message that I didn't have System Admin privileges. So I enabled the Admin account & logged on with it. Still no firewall or internet access. I am running your tools from that account. I have run system file checker & no problems were found.

I already have Malwarebytes Anti-malware, Hitman Pro, and CCleaner installed. Guess I'm paranoid after prior experiences with malware - you guys
saved me that time!! I have the log files from your tools but need to review your posting instructions first.

You can get rid of old logs now:
    • C:\MGtools2012.zip
    • C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\MGlogs_August2012.xlsx

    [IMG] Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [ZeroAccess][Folder] L -- C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\{792f4199-0b73-e2f4-7b46-706eb422a6b8}\L -> FOUND
    • [ZeroAccess][Folder] U -- C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\{792f4199-0b73-e2f4-7b46-706eb422a6b8}\U -> FOUND

Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

    Attached is fixlist.txt
    • Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.

    Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (How to attach)

Re run RogueKiller again (just a scan) and attach new log.

    Explain how things are running.

Completed the steps with only problem being that the reports were not showing up. I figured out that apparently Win 7 protects by writing them to C:\ProgramData\RogueKiller. Copied to my flashdrive & ready to send.

I forgot to mention in my original post an error I'm seeing after every reboot & sign-in. Titlebar: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program C:\...
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application support team for more information.

Clicking Ok & it goes away... no inclination as to which app is involved. Still no internet access.

I did not find these under the Registry Tab... I believe it was the Files tab where I found them & deleted them.

    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache

      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

I cannot get ComboFix. First time I got a virus error message from Avast then the resulting download file would not install on the affected PC. Now I cannot access the page at the link provided in your message. Apparently Avast blocked the site on this computer. Is this a false positive? I could disable Avast & try it but this is my wife's laptop & she will kill me if I get it infected :-D

False positive indeed. Temporarily disable your protection software and then run Combofix please.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Windows\SysNative\8U+4LJxFqBUiWEtZjE1.l

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Do you have your Windows 7 boot CD? I was thinking we could boot into the Recovery Console and try and delete it (and the file we created accidentally) that way.

We could also try Unlocker to see if that works, but take note when installing it:

  30. BoomerFT

    BoomerFT Private E-2

I'll give those a try later today after I finish mowing. I manually deleted the "copy" file (***.1l) last night. Emptied the recycle bin then rebooted to verify & it is gone. I'll post afterward to let you know the results.

Okay. Just so you know I'm in the UK so if you don't hear back from me tonight, I'll be online again tomorrow. :)

  32. BoomerFT

    BoomerFT Private E-2

OK... I first tried the Windows 7 CD & using repair console, successfully deleted the file. Rebooted then found the file present just like before. Next I installed Unlocker, being careful not to install the toolbar - etc. Navigated to the file & selected it. No Lock Handle found & deleted without an error. Again after reboot the file had been recreated with same name as before. Not sure what process is doing this recovery / rebuild of the file.

Using regedit, I deleted some of the registry entries for McAfee - I uninstalled it back in 2012. I also deleted orphaned McAfee folders in the Program directories. I noticed these while reviewing the HijackThis log file in the latest MGTools.zip upload. I also noticed a lot of messages where important files were missing. :confused

When HJT says "File missing" it is most often the case not true. ;) Hence you have to be careful if doing stuff on your own. Look, this one is baffling me, I've used mostly every tool I can think of to try and eradicate that file. I am seeking advice from my colleagues about it. Please hang in there.

Do this in the mean time so I can take a closer look at it:

Could you please get this: 8U+4LJxFqBUiWEtZjE1.l into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Also visit VirusTotal and see what it reports about the file. I am sure it's not good.

    Good idea.
Thanks. But I am struggling with this one. That file I just examined is all "gobbledegook" no signs of it being anything legit, but then again, nothing is detecting the file either including virustotal. Perhaps it's attached to something valid but the file name is terrible if it is!

I don't suppose we ever tried just manually deleting it did we? I doubt it would work anyway. Hang in there. :)

Yes, we've deleted about every way possible. I'll post logs from the Avast scans later. Didn't mean to be rude earlier... I'm in the US, East Tennessee to be exact.

The two scan logs are attached; scanlog.txt (1st scan - all drives), scanlog2.txt (2nd scan - C: drive only). I let Avast autofix after each run. None of the symptoms have changed, however.

    File Assassin

I think this is compatible with Windows 7, let's give it a whirl.

    -------------
    We could also try LockHunter.

Check out the features and the description of the software, and let me know how you get on.

    -------------

Worst comes to the worst you can always boot from a Linux LiveCD, Windows PE and try deleting from there, but that is not my territory I'm afraid.

  43. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

I have just downloaded FileAssasin, and it delete the file. (I downloaded a copy of the file you attached; to my desktop) There may be some compatibility issues with Win7. But it deleted the file. Just did not place into recycle bin as promised. Not that we care in this instance.

I'm going to reboot and check if it returns (obviously it might just delete straight away for me. It could be tied into something else on your system, so not quite a true test.)

    Back in a minute...

OK, I have had a talk with Chaslang and we don't believe the file is malware anymore. We think it's tied into something you have installed. Now, as for what problems remain... is your internet still down? Is your firewall still down?
