I asked this question once before and didnt get the help I needed. My computer since then has progressively gotten worse. I cant even start it up now, I hit control+alt+delete to restart it after seeing this screen and no luck, sometimes I wont get on my computer days at a time. I run Windows XP and I have a relatively new Compaq I bought just last year. Now please someone help me, how can I fix this? Whats wrong with my computer and whats making it do this....and how do I fix it?

There is a good chance that your hard drive is bad. If your computer is still under warranty, you should contact HP/Compaq for support.

Ahh...yes I did contact Compaq/HP yesterday. They wanted me to extent my warranty for $100.00 before they would offer me assistance. Is there anything else (or cheaper) I can do? I dont have a system disk for my computer, it never came with one. What should I do here?

If your hard drive has failed, you are still going to need the system restore CDs. You should be able to order the CDs from Compaq at a minimally cost, something like $9.95.

For someone a Compaq costumer support to tell you they need you to extend your warranty before they help you is BS. At least they could give you an idea of what was wrong with your computer.

If you need a new hard drive you can get a decent sized HDD for around $100.

Re: Boot Disk Failure Insert System Disk and Press Enter

Ya know, thats a very interesting point. I call the number on the booklet and get this foreign speaking dude, he refuses to tell me whats even wrong with my computer and tells me my only option now is to fork out $100.00 for an extended warranty or whatever before he is even going to offer his expertise. Can I get a boot disk made from a friend's computer? My friend across the street has a HP thats about the same as my computer and has Windows XP, do ya think I can make a boot cd from his computer or does one have to be specially for my computer?

HP and Compaq Rwcovery sets are different. You need a recovery set for your computer. You could try the one that your friend has, but it would have to be the samve version of XP for which you have a product key.

There's a chance of something else being the culprit here.
If you have a floppy disk in the floppy drive, you could
    get that message at bootup.

Back in the day when I would be doing the startup disk-Windows install,
I used to leave that damn disk in there all the time. I wish I had a dollar
for every time I got that message!

    I am -begging- someone to please help me with this same problem;

there are no disks in my computer; all i'm getting is a black screen -- with white text
anytime i press a button it makes little clicky sounds inside the computer -- i get a blue screen when i first turn it on that says HP INVENT and nothing else it goes straight to the black screen that says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AN DPRESS ENTER--

i'm not as computer savvy as a lot of you so some of the things mentioned are over my head- I tried rebooting it several times; instead of getting better it seems to be getting -worse- at least before I had more text even if it was just the startup girbish that usually comes up and no windows XP professional

my fear is -did i loose my photos?? what can I do to save them if they're still in the computer? someone said that all info in a computer is always there unless you take a big magnet to it or do soemthing almost as equally drastic? is this true!??????

i'm a single mom and expensive things really aren't an option for me; any step by step do it myself fixit options would be more than hugely appreciated -- i'm on a borrowed laptop and all I want is to get my childs photos off of the other computer; i'm freaking out a little...

    please help.

The clicking sounds point to your hard drive going bad. Is your computer a PC or a laptop?

Agreeing with Sach2 sounds like hard disk is going out....

I have to say there might be a small possiblity of saving those photos, but that require someone with knowledge of computer systems.. Can't say if it would work though...
