I have tried looking for the answer on the internet. I have not had any luck or maybe I am doing the seach wrong so I have decided to post my question to the experts at MG

Correct me if I am wrong.

pretty much all dvd media have 4.7 gigs of space right.

I have 2 programs that burn dvds both of them report that I only have 4483 gigs of space on a brand new tdk cdr I have checked the label and the tdk cdr states 4.7 gigs

    I tried nero and
Veritas HP record now (came with the dvd burner)

Where happened to the rest of the space.

I know for a fact that the dvd media is brand new

can someone tell me why some space is missing

    Thank you in advanced

i am not certain but i think i read somewhere that the 4.7 gigs is raw capacity, the 4483 you are seeing in the burning apps is what you can fit on it after the formatting and closing processes. anyone feel free to corect me if i am wrong, or add more to it

I found the information I was looking for I figured I post it here so if anybody else has the same question now you know. The kind that is mostly sold in stores is dvd5 I have never seen the other kind.

    DVD+RW
DVD+RW is a ReWriteable media format of the DVD+R standard.

    DVD-10
DVD-10 is a double sided single layer DVD which can fit up to 9.4 GB or 8.7 computer GB. Video DVD, DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W supports this format.

    DVD-18
DVD-18 is a double sided dual layer DVD which can fit up to 17 GB or 15.9 computer GB which some commercial video DVDs are using today (a DVD-18 is basicly four pressed plastic DVD-5s pressed together, they are not burned). Video DVD supports this format but DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W does not support this format.

    DVD-5
    DVD-5 is a single sided single layer DVD that stores up to about 4.7 GB = 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.38 computer GigaBytes where 1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes(4 700 000 000B/1024 = about 4 589 843KB/1024 = about 4485MB/1024 = about 4.38GB) . Video DVD, DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W supports this format. Often referred to as "single sided, single layer".

    DVD-9
DVD-9 is a single sided dual layer DVD which can fit up to 8.5 GB or 7.95 computer GB which many commercial video DVDs are using today (a DVD-9 is basicly two pressed plastic DVD-5s pressed together, they are not burned). Video DVD supports this format but DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W does not support this format.

    ALso found out -------------

How come that I can fit 740 MB on a 74 min CD or 800 MB on a 80 min CD?
A VCD,XVCD,XSVCD or SVCD are burned in mode 2 form 2 instead of ordinary data mode where you fit 650 MB on a 74 min CD. The mode2 form2 has less error correction than data mode.

    80 min CD
    VCD/SVCD/XVCD mode
    Mode2 Form2 = 2324 bytes/sector = 360 000 * 2324 = about 800 MB on a 80 min CD.
    Data mode
    Mode1 Form1 = 2048 bytes/sector = 360 000 * 2048 = about 700 MB on a 80 min CD.

    (a 80min CD has 75 sectors/s = 80min CD * 60 * 75 = 360000)

    74 min CD
    VCD/SVCD/XVCD mode
    Mode2 Form2 = 2324 bytes/sector = 333 000 * 2324 = about 740 MB on a 74 min CD.
    Data mode
    Mode1 Form1 = 2048 bytes/sector = 333 000 * 2048 = about 650 MB on a 74 min CD.

    (a 74min CD has 75 sectors/s = 74min CD * 60 * 75 = 333000)
