Is this an integrated ethernet card? If so, any idea what brand your mother board is? Downloading & installing the latest chipset drivers for your mobo should fix your problem.

If it's a separate plug-in ethernet card, are you able to see any identifiable names or markings on the card to help identify it?

I know that this may sound stupid, but have you ran Aida or Belarc to see if it will detect the chipset for the NIC? Also, is the Recovery Partition still on it? From what I found doing a search on Compaq.com for the 6000 series Presarios is that the one that I looked at had the nVidia Chipset, but that does not say that yours may have an Intel chipset for the NIC. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&os=228&product=213859&cc=us&softwareitem=wk-12816-1
