Cyclic redundancy check???

    Hi, I am hoping to get some help on a problem I have with m laptop, I reformatted my laptop and now I cant upgrade from XP sp1, I got the cyclic redundancy check error, I ran the CHKDSK and it runs fine from stage 1-4 then at stage 5 it stays at 0% complete:confused:confused , Its a pretty old latop I have but is there anyway of repairing it? Its a Compaq presario 2100.

    Are you trying to upgrade the service pack form online or form a disc?

    If have downloaded the file and get that CRC error I would think the hard drive is dying.

    New hard drive needed then?? :cry Ha, I dont even know if I will get a new hard drive for this laptop, its pretty old.:confused.

    How long did you let the chkdsk run? You did mention it hangs at 0%, but during this time was there any activity on the hard drive? Most laptops have an led that represents hdd access.

    Yeah you can still find small IDE 2.5" laptop hard drives fairly cheap. $35-$40 for a 20Gb drive.
