    Hi,
I apologise in advance - I am NOT computer literate at all!!!! I am probably going to be a huuuuge pain in the bum, but I desperately need help!!!! =]
It started a week ago, little annoying things like dialogue boxes popping up, particularly my internet connection box, computer started running real slow and then the problems with the email.
Using IE browser (I have now downloaded Firefox) I go to log in with .NET passport and it brings up the Match The Picture box. I do that and it goes back to the login .NET passport page and back and forth it goes. As I do each one and hit 'continue' it goes back to the other page.
I discovered 2 days ago that once I log in then do the Match The Picture thing once, I can then hit on hotmail that I have bookmarked and it takes me to my inbox, but I must still login and do the match the picture thing at least once before it will take me to my inbox.
Now once I am there, I can read my emails but cannot send any. Every time I try it comes up with that damn Match The Picture again!!! ARRRRRRGH!!!!!!!
So 3 days ago, yes I spent all weekend on this, I discovered your site. I have followed all that I was told to do in the thread 'Read this before downloading HijackThis'.
Most of the spyware software i already had and run after each time I am on the net, but what I didnt have I downloaded and ran. There are 2 things I have not done properly.
1: I couldn't get it to do the safe mode thing by hitting the F8 key?????? I tried a few times but it didnt do anything.
2: Now you are going to know how computer illiterate I really am, but I don't know how to make a folder for the Hijack This. So even tho your thread says not to save HJT to my desktop, I did.(
I don't know how to make a folder and how to put it in there.
That sounds so dumb but it's true.
I would really appreciate any help you could give me as I have just started working from home and really need this computer to work at optimum level.
You said to put specifics about the computer.....this is all i know, I hope it's enough.

    Dell Dimension 8300
    3.2ghz
    516ram
    Windows XP home edition

Is that all you need to know??????
Thanx for your time and patience.
    Cheers,
    Toni

    Hi,
Ill get you started. To get to safe mode should be easy. Problem is with a Dell, you dont know when to hit the f8 key because of the splash screen. You really need to do this step if possible. Once the computer starts up, start tapping the f8 key, once you get to the Windows Splash screen, you missed it. Definetely try this again, I have had great luck removing problems in safe mode.

To create a new folder, try this:

Double click My Computer icon on your desktop
Double click the main hard drive (Probably c:)
In the top left corner click File, New Folder
It will create a new folder in the right pane called New Folder, click there and name it Hijack This

Thankyou sooooooo much for your help!!!

Ok, I followed your intstructions. I downloaded all the software you told me too, I closed all programs, disabled system restore, allowed hidden files to be seen etc. I managed to run all the scans in safe mode and this is all I got:

Ad-Aware - 3 entries for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:soft I can't read the rest of what it says

I also have registry mechanic and so I ran that as well.

Registry Mechanic said the same - High priority, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE blah blah.

Spybot Search and Destroy - DSO exploit 3 entries

So then I rebooted and used the HJT.
I have looked up some of the lines on the log and from what I have read so far there seems to be nothing wrong. Everything seems fine. Of course it has taken me hours and I have never done this before so cahnces are I have done something wrong.

Can I send you the log to look at for me, pleeeeeease????

    Thanks a zillion,
    Arty Pants

Did you run ALL steps of the READ ME FIRST and did you make sure you have the versions that our links indicate? If so, follow the steps below.

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Please follow directions and attach .log files as HijackThis directly creates. Word files are annoying to work with and take up more space. Also you did not install HijackThis where requested. You have it on your Desktop which is where we specifically request it not be placed. You have it here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Toni\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

And why are you attaching the Hijackthis Tutorial to it?

Is www.ttcws.com your desired Start Page?
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ttcws.com/

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://awbeta.net-nucleus.com (HKLM)
    O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Those are the only items I see that should be fixed. I doubt any of these have anything to do with your email problems. You may want to try a temporary disable of your firewall and see if you can send emails. If you can send mail with the firewall disabled, you probably have not configure your firewall properly to allow your email program to work.
