    Hello,
I searched the forums and I noticed that quite a few people had this problem before. Basically, all software and browsers get de-selected and all games I run minimize to desktop while I'm playing. I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with Auto Update always on.

I followed the procedures described in your "README FIRST" (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407) and all the clean-up procedures (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313). This did not solve my problem. After that I tried following the procedure described here (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=173268) and of course here (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=203914) plus here (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525). To no avail.

I'm attaching the logs of the clean-up I ran, in the hope that some of you guys can see something that I didn't notice. You're obviously more experienced on the matter than I am.

Thank you very much for your time.

    1. IMPORTANT: You are running combofix from the wrong location. We require it to be directly on the desktop and not here where you have it:

So please delete the old combofix and download the new.

    Combofix

    2. The MGTools.exe that you have is a little out of date, so we need to download a fresh copy of that also before we continue and ensure it is indeed being run from the C drive and not anywhere else on your machine.

Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    3. We need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    5. Download the MBR Rootkit Detector to your desktop.

    • Doubleclick mbr.exe and follow prompts.
    • A black DOS window will quickly appear then disappear.
    • When mbr.exe is finished it will create a log on your desktop.
    • Copy and paste contents of that log file to your next reply.

    6. Run the new MGTools.exe file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. and the MBR rootkit detector.

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

A couple of files I wanted dead are still present on the machine, let's do the below:

    1. Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    2. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from avenger.
    3. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Hello again,

I followed your new instructions. You'll find the logs attached. Anyway, the report I got from Avenger seems to indicate that the two files you mentioned could not be deleted. The log says they are in fact directories. What are those files, anyway?

Curiously enough, the 'programs minimizing on their own' problem never occurred yesterday and still hasn't occurred today. I'll let you know how things are going as soon as I have time to run the machine for a few hours consecutively.

Thank you very much. You're being very helpful!

    Yes. My bad.

That's good to hear, let me know how things are again after you run these instructions.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from avenger.

Everything looks good to me. Empty temp files from the below bold folder then you can follow the final steps.

    C:\WINDOWS\temp

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you very much for your help.
Everything seems to be working fine, for now. I just have one last question: I am using AVG Free 9. The guide "How to Protect yourself from malware!" seems to indicate that AVG Free already has some anti-spyware routine going on. Would you suggest I install another anti-spyware program besides AVG Free 9?

Anwyway, your help was very much appreciated. You guys really know what you're doing!

I would keep MBAM and SAS and use them as scanners in which you can run every couple of weeks or whenever you see fit. Unless you purchase them there's no real time protection which could possibly conflict with anything else.

Alright then. I'll Keep my AVG 9 active and run an SAS every now and again. This should also be muche less resource-hungry as a process.

    Thank you!
