I run windows xp pro here at work. Totaly randomly this machine will just freeze up and there is nothing to do except hold the power buttom down untill it is shut down.

I was almost certain that it was my ram chip being broken. I thought that the memory was bad and would just give up randomly, causeing the machine to freeze. But I put a fresh stick of 512 ddr in and pulled out the old. Since then the machine has frozen up again twice.

Any ideas for xp specifically? I can try differnt hardware if needed as I work computers and hardware.

    Re: XP = Try this

I recently purchased a new tower with the latest hardware and I had somewhat of the same problem?

I placed my computer in a computer desk compartment which really did not have very much room to contain same and I feel computer over heated and tripped out/froze!! [I have now have the computer outside the cabinet]
The Graphic card I am using is a NVIDIA Geforce 6600 GT and Used the MSI site to update the driver which found was not the latest [I would never use MSI again!!] = I found the NVIDIA Web site had a much later driver which I installed as per their instructions
The mouse programming I uninstalled and reinstalled as per the manufactures recommendations

1st = Make sure your computer has sufficient space around it to enable it to be in a cool open environment

2nd = Suggest you check and see if you have the latest driver for your video card

3rd= If you are using a optical mouse make sure you have the latest programming for it and is correctly installed as per manufactures specs = Yoy could try someone else's mouse???

4th = Use this small program "Sensors View" to check on the temperature of your important computer components

    Hope may help!!

I am starting to think that it is over heating maybe. I keep my monitor onto of my box which would create lots of extra heat. The sensor proram says that my box doesn't have sensors built in but says that my hd0 is at 48 Celcius and 119 degree F

what is other ways I can check to see if this over hearting is the problem? Computer will just completly freeze up if they get that hot?

Take your monitor off the case/box...take the cover off the case/box...and run it with the cover off. Also you can point a small fan into the internals of the computer (with the cover off ofcourse) and if it runs without crashing...then it was an overheat problem!! And while you have the cover off...blow it out, and make sure there is nothing with a nice layer of dust on it!! If the internals are coated with dust...it could be acting as a blanket and not letting the heat out!! If the fans are very dusty, it can cause them to slow down or completely stop, so while you are exploring, make sure all the fans are operating appropriately!!!!

Whatever you do though...do not go sticking the vacuum in there to clean out the dust!!

rogvalcox, I was thinking the same thing to test the heat theory. I am going to let the box run over the weekend with the shell off. If I come back on Monday and the box is still up, it must be the heat issue. I will also clean it out while the shell is off.

Ill keep you all posted on how the test goes :)

Well when I left the office last nite I took the monitor off the box and took the shell off so it had plenty of air. I put up an irc client to see the status of the box but it crashed some time last nite with this error ...

    * testbot has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out)

So I doubt the server randomly kicked the client, the box obviously died. Any other ideas to try?

I am fresh out of ideas. The only thing I can think of would be the power supply. Is there any software I can use to test my power supply before actually replacing it ?

Not sure about the hardware, but did you try some software stuff like a check-disk? (ALWAYS back up important data before running a check-disk)

I had a similar problem, and a BIOS update seemed to (partially) cure it. My pc locked up several times a day after I first took delivery, so I returned it and the chap that built it flashed the BIOS.

Now it only locks up about once a week ... so it's nearly fixed
