We are sorry that this happened to you, but you are not alone. This has started happening a lot lately and we don't, as yet, know what is causing it ....other than the assumption that some new malware is changing system files and thereby rendering systems unbootable.

Try this and let us know if it works:

There are two options and the first would less destructive:

    1. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&sd=tech this often works very well and gets you back to a point with fewer overall changes to your system. That is assuming that the problem is only due to registry corruption.
    2. Then there is a rebuild option. See the below link:
    * http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897
    * make sure you have the product key available as you will need it at screen 12 (read thru the steps).

laptop is frozen at the Acer start up screen. How do i get it to start up without CD?

    i ran combofix.exe as instucted ..
and it pretty much screwed up my computer..
so i dont know how to get it back into a working order or past the Acer "splash" screen before i login, it just sits there with a mouse that that stupid blue screen.
i dont have a clue what to do!
    please help!

    ps.
i have a factory system restore.. but i have all my pics on my C:/ and i dont want to loose them! is there anyway i can avoid not erasing them?

Did you try doing either of the suggestions I posted? What results or problems did you encounter doing them?

No. i dont have an XP CD and every system start-up i tried doesnt work. Safe mode, Last known...

i can do Alt + F10, but thats a factor system restore, and that would erase everything on my C: drive. and thats something i dont want to do :(

    is there another way?

Who did you purchase your PC from? You need a bootable copy of your Windows CD for reasons just like this (and others). They should have given you one when you bought the PC. Call them to get a copy. In the mean time, see if you can borrow a copy of the same Windows version and service pack level from one of your firends and then try those steps Tim gave you in message # 4.

The other alternative is to put your hard disk into another PC as a slave drive and copy all of the info off it that you need. Then you could do one of two things depending on your expertise level:
    1. while installed as a slave drive you could also attempt to restore your registry backups that ComboFix made by manually copying the files from the backup folder to your drives WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG folder. The ComboFix backups are on your drive in the \ComboFix\qoobox\Hiv-backup folder.
    2. put it back into your PC and use the Factory Restore to start over.
Tim should be able to help you with step 1 above if you decide to use this method.

i bought my Laptop from Tigerdirect.com. It was from Acer. i didnt receive a copy of an XP CD in the box, and i dont know anyone who has an XP CD either. i dont know how to take out my hard drive, and i dont dare try.

so i dont know what all to do right nowhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

If it was purchased not too long ago perhaps you can call Tiger or Acer to get a copy.

Absolutely know one you know has a CD? Even at work?

If you cannot get a CD or get someone to make a CD like this UBCD4Win for you to use (it still requires a Windows XP CD) and if you cannot easily take the laptop harddisk to another PC to copy files from it, then there is no much of a choice left except to use your factory system restore option. I'm not sure if these totally deletes everything and recreates a partition or not. You may want to ask about this in the Software Forum.
