Long range wireless

I was wondering what you guys could tell me about long range wireless devices. I've seen things which claim to have a 14 km (8.6 Miles) with line of sight in the 200$ range per antenna. Of course I'd have to buy two for a setup one on each as this isn't omni directional.

My problem is when I have seen this I wasn't paying attention, and now I'm in a position where I could really use this sort of thing, so I was wondering if anyone knows the brand names or model numbers for stuff like this. I'm really only looking at about a 1 to 3 km (.6 to 1.8 miles) setup. But I'm having trouble finding what I need.
