Trojans and Worms that won't go away

    Please help,

I've tried researching the problems with my system, but the fixes I have found haven't removed everything. I was able to remove the pop-ups by running VundoFix.exe, but the online scans still keep detecting worms and cookies. I am still getting a large window pop-up that also has a fake message bar at the top of the window.

(In addition, I get an error message upon boot-up that wbdsqwvq.dll is missing. I'm assuming that is something that needs to be removed in the registry.)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Additional files to follow.)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are not using the current version of HijackThis and you do not have it properly installed and renamed as requested in the READ ME. Please correct this now. You can get the correct version here: Trend Micro HijackThis make sure you install it to the proper folder in C:\Program Files (do not put it on your Desktop) and rename the HijackThis.exe file to analyse.exe

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
    4. the ComboFix log
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Once again, many thanks for your help.

I have followed your instructions and will attach the requested files. It was unclear if I was supposed to do the scans before or after installing the latest Java runtime program. So I proceeded in the following manner:
    - Uninstalled HijackThis, and downloaded the newest version. The file would not create the new directory under Program Files, but I followed the instruction from the FAQ and created the proper location. In addition, I renamed the file as you requested. (A quick head's up. The FAQ lists the latest version as 1.99...., but I don't know if the link will download the newest version. FYI.)
    - I removed the two programs that you mention should have been removed. (My bad.)
    - I ran combofix.exe and attached the .text file to this post.
    - I restarted the computer, and ran GetRunKey and ShowNext. Those files are attached to this post.
    - I reran HijackThis and will post the log file in a follow-up post.

I still need to re-install the Java runtime program. While combofix.exe was running, Trend-Micro isolated a virus. (However, this virus has been isolated and deleted several times.) In addition, I am still getting that .dll missing error message on boot-up that I posted in my first message.

Yes we know and it is acceptable to use the 1.99.1 version which will default to extracting HijackThis into the correct folder and then only a rename is necessary. I had you download the new version since we are using it in a new version of the READ ME (not yet released for general use).

Always follow steps in the order written. Thus the new Java would not be installed until after ComboFix was run. And then ALL new logs (including HJT) would be obtained afterwards.

I'm looking at your logs now.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: Adsense Helper Object - {18FA53D3-B7A8-4309-8045-D43D6AA2DCE9} - C:\Program Files\Adsense Helper Object\aho.v5.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I apologize if my first comments sounded egotistical. I was hoping to just point out some confusing points that I found.

I've followed your instructions step by step. (One exception, I had already disabled System Restore before I made my first post.) I am posting the log files you have requested.

In the meantime, I will run some of the online scans to search for any final remants of worms or trojans. Once I've completed those scans, I'll post my results as well.

Here is the final file, the Hijack This log. I will let you know how the online scans go.

You still have not installed the new Sun Java version as requested in message # 3. You need to do this.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I figured that I would hold off on installing Java Runtime until I got the system clean.

I decided to re-run the online scans (BitDefender and Panda) and they reported the continued presence of worms/trojans. I thought it might be possible that some of the other programs used would show up like this. Please verify the online scan logs to make sure that anything detected is not malware.

In case you need it, I will also attach the HijackThis, RunKey, and ShowNext logs too. Otherwise, I will follow your instructions on tool removal.
