Something is eating up my freee space

Hello, I'm new here, I'm coming with a major problem that I can not solve - so I'm asking for some help, if anyone can spare the time. I have noticed that my computer is losing it's free space on disc C, without any explanation. I did not save large files lately, I cleaned all the unnecessary programs and items, but still it seems to be saving something in the background, although I don't have any program that updates itself. In approximately1 month it filled freespace as 30G, at a 1-2 G per day rate. What can this be? I checked with all the antivirus and malware programs available, nothing came up. I'm pretty desperate here, not knowing what can I do. Thanks for any idea.

Welcome to the Malware Removal forum. :)

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only RogueKiller and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run the rest of the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions on the infected account.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

No, I don't - somehow I could not get it, but it was nothing there too. I asked for help here, because nothing worked. Can you please try to figure out what can this be? The computer is working fine, but the freee space is vanishing, and even the smart defrag could not organize things. Could it be something wrong with my harddrive? or with Windows?

While it is not a topic for this forum since you are not having malware problems, I suggest that you just check to see if it is from System Restore points being created each time you reboot and every time you make some change to your system ( like installing updates ). Your logs showed all the below restore points and as you can see, they can be quite large.

Thank you for your answer; I'm not so sure what to look at in those files; as you have perhaps noticed, I'm not quite a techie :) should I delete them, or what else can I do?

No you cannot manually delete restore points. You have to disable System Restore to remove restore points. Then you reenable system restore to recreate one new starting restore point.

But my point is that I think your problem is not malware. It is the normal process of having restore points created that is causing you to see a decrease in free space.

    See the below:

    Disable And Enable System Restore

Thank you for your answer; I will try to remove the previous restore points, see if it solves the problem. The main issue is that the losing of the free space is continuosly happening, at a variable rate, without the warning of backup or creating restore points, which are usually created when a change in the system occurs. Anyway, should I move this thread in the software section?

I think I have a new problem rolleyes ; the computer just cured itself...Just when I was going to take it to the next level - disable system restore, that is - I checked again the free space. There it was - just the amount supposed to be, after all the cleaning and scanning! Now that is something I cannot get, because I didn't do anything!!! An explanation would be nice, though...:) So with the wild hope that my problem is miraculously solved, I want to thank you for your time and all the great tools and advice you provided, in such a short time.

    Okay but that's not a problem. :)

I cannot explain it because we did not remove/fix anything and you had not yet disable system restore. So what ever change is most likely not due to anything we did .... that is unless in running CCleaner ( from the READ & RUN ME ) you remove a lot of temporary files and this is what you noticed change.

Do note that your restore points are using up about 80 GB based on what I saw.

I cannot explain it either; I runned CC Cleaner before I had this matter addressed here, and it did not cleaned much - I have and use regularely Auslogics BoostSpeed, wich has pretty good cleaning functions. The filling of the free space stopped suddenly, the false occupied space cleaned up by itself, at this point C has just the occupied space taken by windows and some programs, that is 51G; those 80G of restore points have vanished without closing system restore. Repeating myself, I did not do anything but open the computer and it was cured. Is this a mistery, or has something to do with some malicious activity? Thanks for your time, this was a situation I have never encountered since my very first computer - 1998, that is.

Well if the restore points went away, something has toggle System Restore off at some point. You should check to make sure that it is back on now.
