CCleaner. Get it. It's also a disk cleanup utility, so it's a multi-purpose PC maintenance tool.

Yes, CCleaner is the safest and best utility you will find for registry cleaning. It always offers the chance to backup your current settings and is pretty much "Idiot Proof". Just use the Registry button and scan for issues and Allow Backup and select Fix All. I've used it for two years and never had to undo anything.

The Cleaner button removes a lot of Browser history, cache and other settings that I don't want removed so I rarely use this option. If you only want your registry checked for obselete entries than use the Registry button and know that you will not miss anything that is deleted. :)

CCleaner (which is freeware) is probably the most popular choice out there. It works great and is very safe to use as a registry cleaning product. It's very fast and can also be used for clearing out history and other assorted junk accumulated while surfing the web.

There is also fairly new free registry clean-up program called Eusing Free Registry Cleaner which is also a great tool for scanning and then cleaning out 'everyday' dead registry entries. You can choose to scan the entire registry or only selected sections.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner seems to find far more items to 'clean' than many other shareware and freeware utilities which are available. For your own reference I'd strongly suggest that you read the "Feature Details" part of the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner website in order to investigate what this program scans and offers to clean.

Overall; I believe that this program is fairly 'safe' to use. One of the things I like best about the Eusing program is [as the developer's site states]: Eusing Free Registry Cleaner will make an automatic backup creation of the latest repaired entries. Therefore, users will be able to restore any changes made using the software by choosing the 'Restore registry backup' option.

About the only 'negative' thing I can think of about this utility is that every time you start it; a "please donate" registration reminder nag screen pops up. You can just click and that screen goes away but this function cannot be entirely disabled until some donation is made to the developer. This is a minor inconvenience in my opinion, especially considering the quality of the product.

Note to Beginners: Although I have used this program for several years now and it has never caused any problems at all; my feelings about 'registry cleaners' in general are that they should always be used with great caution - but especially when used by 'beginners.' By all means, make sure to always look over the help files thoroughly prior to initially using these types of utility programs so that you can become familiar with exactly how to restore any changes made (should something go terribly wrong after a cleaning). ;)

    Good Luck!

Registry cleaners find different things depending on who programmed it. You could run 2 programs, one would find 100 problems, the other 300. I like to be careful with the registry, so be sure to back up. CCleaner is highly reccomended here because it is a SAFE drive cleaner and registry cleaner. It also has a startup manager. Good utility.

A friend and I took apart an old Ma Bell Telephone years ago and when putting it back together realized they had shaped every piece such that there was only one way they would fit back together again. We coined the phrase "Idiot Proof". :p CCleaner is safe above all else, as Major Attitude affirms. And I've never had to use the backups! :)

Steve_East is correct, going through the settings you can uncheck the boxes for browser settings you want to keep if running the cleaner. I was just saying that by default it removes more than I like. But removing old temporary files is a good thing and should be done once in a while. :)
