how do i find out if my son and/or his friends are using my puter for porn? they know how to delete the history file, and may even be logging in under a different user name. i ask because I've have just run c cleaner and there were a lot of porn sites deleted. is that because they are being visited, or because my puter is blocking them. i know i could just change the master password, but i would like to know whats going on first. aloha and thanks in advance.

Most likely thay are looking at smut!! they may well delete the history files, but I guess CCleaner is finding the left over cookies and temp internet files ( which will house pics etc )

If you use CCleaner to remove everything it finds, then next time run it or check in IE Tools > Internet Options > and under Temporary Internet Files click Settings > View Files and that will list cookies and files from any subsiquent surfing or run CCleaner again and if they have been surfing smut then CCleaner will list more of the same.

Also if there are cookies and files stored still you can right click and choose properties the check there date of creation which will let you know a time/day that they had been created ;)

what about 'surfpass'? will that only block adult sites or does it block laods of innocenty things too? the trouble with changing my password is that every time my son wants to use it for ligit purposes, i have to type it in, and after a while he picks up on what it is.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can use the Content Advisor in Tools, Internet Options, then the Content tab.

I've done that. deleted all the 'approved' sites that looked iffy (and some looked very iffy) and changed the password. which begs the question how did these sites get on the 'approved' list. are any sites that show up on the content rating (which is set quite low) automatically put on the approved list if someone clicks allow? or has someone actually typed these sites in the approved list? although there doesn't seem much difference it boils down to intent. i still want to know if there is more than one email account being used. much aloha

Ask him and his friends next time they are over. A good tipoff are the cookies though. Blocked sites can't place cookies. If you havent added a password to the default Administrator account that can be accessed in safe mode, you might consider doing so. If he is using a different account, it would be found under the list of users in User Accounts in the control panel. He doesn't need an email account to log into the computer, just a user account.

Add a limited account with a password for him. Then you will not need to use your account to give him access, and you can change the password or delete the account when he abuses privileges.

lauraB, use these 2 in conjunction with CCleaner.
as a 3 pronged attack on stuff accumulated after every net session.

Download/install and run all of them.
All are free and don't conflict with each other.
Each finds stuff the other 2 miss.
You will be surprised at what each miss/find. Bazza

If your kid has 1/5th the computer smarts I did when younger, content advisor won't keep him from much if anything, but that depends on your kids knowledge.

to just playin..dat spy didn't work. ccleaner or cleanup must have deleted them, cos they only went back as far as yesterday.

to colemanguy...so what DO i do then? how do you get round the content adviser now I've changed the pass word? if thats possible then how do i stop it?

Well it depends on how smart the kid is, http://www.cyberwalker.net/columns/mar01/220301.html as this involves registry editing and I am sure that the same or similar procedures would apply for later version of xp. I also want to clarify my stance on this if you would allow me to say, I totally agree with your right to do all of this but, am saying that I would be open about it first, then if they don't fuss up or be honast then you go for monitoring type software. But thats just my humble opinon.

i intend to talk with them both seperately. i will wait untill me and hubby have a chance to talk in an unthreatening way. when i got the puter i made him promise that he would not use it for porn, although i understand the temptation, he will have broken his word. i dont think my son knows enough to play with the reg. i will talk to him though. he is also under strict instructions not to view sites that he would not be comfortable with ME seeing. as a rule he is only allowed to use the puter in my presence, but apart from that he is unsupervised. and there is a chance he and/or his friends use it when im out, but it is against 'the rules'

i also want to know if there is more than one email account being used, and/or more than one user logging onto yahoo. how do i find out these things. or how do i simply prevent it? i want the answers before i ask them the questions.

i dont feel i am spying. i am a) protecting my puter, b)protecting my son and c) protecting my marriage. (i hope) much aloha

EmpTemp is simply another program that helps gets rid of the crap one accumulates every net session. No downsides to using it. It lists allfiles before YOU delete them. All 3 that I recommended work well singly. They work better in conjunction with each other. Major trap is to check out the default settings on all 3 so that they are setup the same. If you set one up to keep cookies and allow the other 2 to delete cookies, then cookies will be gone. If 1 keeps URL history, then the other 2 may delete History. I just use all 3 with their standard defaults, except emptying in "deleted files". I prefer to do this manually. I run all 3 every day. Amazing the volume of stuff they find. I recommend running Cleanup! first as it keeps a running total of all files deleted, for your information. Bazza

EmpTemp is not difficult to use, but certainly not as easy as CC or Cleanup!.

It has to be done manually.

(1). It starts up showing the Temp Folders tab. If any programs are listed, just click on the lightning bolt and they will be removed.

(2). Next click on Cookies, History, URL tab and then on "show all" tab (far left icon on second row). Click on lightning bolt to remove all.

(3). Next click on "Find tmp files" tab. Click on appropriate Hard drive designation. I usually only click on C: as my others are for backup purposes. It will then check for all temp (tmp) files. It may take a while. If it lists any files, click on lightning bolt, far left one.

This will remove all tmp files (except 2 that cannot be removed).

(4). Then click on "Clipboard and Shortcuts" tab and then click on that is the far left one, in the centre group of 4. This will list all clipboards and shortcuts and then check to see of they are all valid and unbroken. If it finds any broken ones, click on the lightning bolt and they will be gone.

(5). Then close down program, click on X, top right of screen.

This takes longer to write about it, than it does to do.

But it is another arrow to your bow, in keeping your PC ticking over. Bazza.

If you use the Content Advisor in conjunction with a limited account, he won't be able to edit the Registry.

ZoneAlarm do, or us to do, a firewall called ZoneAlarm with WebFiltering, which restricted adult and unsavoury sites.
