Computer freezing every few minutes. Interesting finding when playing games....

    Everyone,

I've read the preview post on how to clean virii/trojans, and I have been unable to fix this. I even downloaded Norton Anti Virus 2005 (for $90) and it also found onthing other than some small cookie trackers (NO TROJANS!!!??). I've since removed Norton (it made my computer incredibly slow).

Every few minutes (very sporadic) my mouse will freeze in windows for a few seconds. Note, the computer itself does not freeze (read about my gaming example below). It will repeat this every 5-10 minutes only for a few seconds.

In games, my ping has increased dramatically. Instead of pinging 30, I'm now 70-100 (fluctuating). Another server I ping 80 at, I ping 110-140 (fluctuating). I never fluctuated before. As well, if I'm playing an FPS, the same mouse freezing will occur, but my character will point straight UP or straight DOWN at the same time it is frozen. Also, I believe hte freezing is causing some key combinations to be pressed, because my computer likes to "beep" if too many keys are pressed ato nce, and while playing an FPS the computer will beep now every few minutes (when the mouse is frozen), AND it wil switch weapons on me! For example, 9 is my railgun, and if I'm holding another weapon - when the mouse freezes for a few seconds (NOTE the computer is not freezing, I sitll see other peopel rnning around and stuff), it SWITCHES to my railgun automatically.

WHAT DOES THIS REPRESENT? WHAT DO I DO? I feel like just reformatting, but I have a lot of stuff I have to organize before I do that (have to be sure I have all of my application install CDs).

I have a hijackthis log but am not attaching it without request.

    Thanks,
    ELmO

What OS are we talking about?

Have you installed anything lately? Upgrades, patches, cheats for your game? Have you tried shutting down items that are running using Task Manager to see if it helps?

Do you have any spyware blocking programs running (like SpySweeper or SpywareGuard)?

You could try running MS-Config, and seeing anything weird that might be going on in your system. Also, you can download Fresh Diagnose , and it will give you a huge overview of your system info (more detailed than MS system info.). Maybe that way you can see something odd, and disect it.

Windows XP. I haven't installed anything at all that would make it act like this, I just noticed that at the same time windows started freezing my mouse, my ping in gamse has gone crazy.

I've tried shutting down items in task manager, and some (even though suspicious) come up with an error saying "This is a system process". I'm not sure, I relaly need someone else to analyze the hijack log to tell me what looks weird.

    THanks,

You did not answer my question about:
Do you have any spyware blocking programs running (like SpySweeper or SpywareGuard)?

Before we get to a HijackThis log I have to ask you to please follow all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal >

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

If still having a problem after that you should read the tutorial in this Sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis as a .txt file attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail, items in the tray, anything you can close... Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder or choose run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I took 3 hours and ran through the entire thread's installs and went into safe mode and checked it all up. It found mostly cookies to delete, no virus or trojan found (??). Makes me wonder, I haven't updated drivers for anything in a long time, but maybe some driver conflict is occurring?

Also, it's so sporadic, it's hard to tell what's going on. I thought maybe my crucial RAM (2x 256 sticks) could be dying? It once did the freezing whenever I opened up a picture in a microsoft viewer, it doesn't do it now though.

My system is an AMD 2400+ with 512 MB Crucial, onboard audio, ATI Radeon 9700 all in wonder pro, on an ASUS NForce2 motherboard. I've had it for almost 2 yeras now I think and it hasn't had a problem.

I've attached the TXT file. I'm upgrading my system when Half Life 2 comes out anywya, so that will require a format...but Half Life 2 could be anywhere from 1 month to a year away - harhar.

PS, the mouse is still freezing sporadically. I haven't tried out a game yet...

Your Windows OS and IE are seriously out of date! You really should update. I'm not saying that will cure this problem you are having but your have a lot of security holes.

Here are a bunch of comments/questions based on looking at your HJT log.

Can you explain why these IP address are in your hosts file and who put them there

Do you need the DIGStream program. Here is some info on this from AnsweresThatWork. "This task downloads in the background videos that you will watch or are likely to watch when you access, or next access ESPN Motion, Movies.com, or ABC TV. The result is two-fold : we are not sure about the storage implications of constantly having DIGSTREAM running in the background. More importantly, however, on a corporate network the use of DIGSTREAM by a number of users very quickly reduces the Internet bandwidth of the network with serious implications for those users who rely on speedy Internet access for their work."
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DIGStream] F:\Program Files\DIGStream\digstream.exe
Why do you load AOLdial at startup? Do you always want to be connect as soon as you startup?
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOLDialer] F:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe
Did you try shutting down AOL Spyware to see if it is causing the freezing?
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOL Spyware Protection] "F:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1\AOLSP Scheduler.exe"
Why do you run Internet Explorer at startup?

Why do you need the always run a registration tool from Pinnacle at startup?
    O4 - Startup: Registration-Studio 8 SE.lnk = F:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 8\Register\RegTool.exe
Why do you need to always load Webshots launcher program? Do you really need this?
    O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = F:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe

I put those in the host log, I use them for work.

I removed htis yesterday, so my computer is still freezing (and I have hiigh fluctuating ping..)

I don't know what that is, I do have AOL.

    I'll try this.

Just used to have IE open immediately, turned that off yesterday.

I removed these yesterday as well. I will remove the other stuff and see what ahppens.

    Thanks!
