how do you unlock the dvd region on your pc?

hey dudes,

i lent my laptop to a mate of mine (never again) and when she bought it back, it had crashed. after doing a system restore, i felt like watching a dvd and became aware that it was stuck on region 1, with no changes left availible. im in australia (region 4) so its getting to be a pain.
HP technical assistants cant seen to be able to tell there a$$ from there elbow, so my search for a solution is going nowhere and im still unsure weather this is a hardware or software problem. there have been some great people on this site who have helped me out before, so if ANYONE can help me out or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

I will keep an eye on this, I have a DVD nut for a friend Ill ask, but would an option in the player program, be it WMP10 or Nero, be what needs to be changed. OR perhaps a codec?

 

right click your cd or dvd drive, click properties > hardware tab > click on the dvd drive > properties button > then click on dvd region

you will have only 5 attempts, so make each one count

 

Ther is software and tweaks available to allow unlimited changes of region, but im not sure if it is ok to go into it in here..

Can a Mod/Admin let me know if that would be ok please?

It may be possible to overwrite your drive's firmware to remove the hardware region protection. Be sure to read everything and follow all directions carefully as there is some risk involved.
