    game issues pls help

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    OK I have been trying to figure out how to make ultima online run faster and nothing works > i have defragged. I have downloaded a ram booster, i have downloaded and installed the lastest vid card drivers. it is still slow. almost as if im on dial-up with this game and I dont know whats wrong.
    i disabled my old card which was intel extreme graphic.
    i uninstalled that before installing the vid card. and disabled it from the by going to the sytem devices. and also went to bios and stopped it sharing ram so I could have new card use the new ram that I installed also a 512

    You using a modem? Not much you can do then. Dialup sucs bigtime for gaming. I know....I'm on dialup. :(

    i have a modem yes but i dont use it. ive been on cable for about year. but my game is running like its on cable. extremely slow and frames overlap into eachother. and it feelsl like my guy is trying to run through water versus how it used to be when my guy was running around like on speed

    You're 3 main issues right there.

    Celeron processors blow.

    That card is pretty much worthless

    Onboard Audio is more trouble than it's worth.

    ok...er thx i guess?
    to switch over to a athlon would cost more than i could afford and that vid card was all i could afford it cost 110
    and i have yet to upgrade my audio.

    Hehe, Sorry a little to straight forward I guess, Just trying to be as honest as possible not trying to sugar coat anything.

    Reason I say it won't work is, Even if you do get a new video card, Upgrade you're Audio, That processor is still going to bottleneck the whole machine.

    And going for another processor...You're better off getting a new Mobo too...Gaming on a PC costs alot of money...Most people don't realize that when they first try with a store bought system.

    Depends what types of games your wanting to run "granted" th elatest and greatest games would not play well on your specs, and I would always leave Audio out of the equation as its not a massive problem with gaming performance if any, I have had no issues with onboard audio in ANY game, ok depends on the audio chip used in relation to sound quaility but for throwing polygons around a screen the audio chip has no envolvement in that process.

    your CPU is fine for general gaming, ok not the best CPU for gaming due to lowered CPU L# caches on its big P4 brother but none the less is well within specs for the game I guess you are wanting to speed up "Ultima Online"?

    from a read of your post its slow online gameplay YES? to that end it does seem as if your getting low pings, some info on troubleshooting that area http://support.uo.com/tech_0.html

    also, disable any un-needed software from running in the background that would connect to the internet.

    What speed cable do you have and are its speeds fine in everyday downloading? try a speed test, i kinda like this one but pick the furthest server from you http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ are the results close to the speed you pay for ( you will have lower figure that you connect at due to overheads )

    Hmm, I read somewhere that Onboard audio took a substantial amount of memory away from performance. Hence why a majority of gamers use the High performance Audigy Cards for gaming...I don't believe it would just be for sound.

    And given his specs I think he could use any bit of performance he can get if you ask me...That only reason I say his onboard would be a problem now I know it's not a main problem but, Small problems can sometimes lead to big problems^_^.

    But that's just my opinion.

    my ping is fine for the game. my old onboard video card made it faster than this one does..and i have no latency on the game according to the servers.and i checked the speed from the site .downloading is 4700 and uploading is 245

    also i have my moniter hoooked up to the vid card moniter slot should i hook it up to the original slot that the old vid card is in?

    should i be increasing my mtu's , my page file.anything at all i can do?cuz this game has very low low minimum requirements to run

    Its negligable.

    At least in regards to Nvidia based boards. Its usually for sound that people use standalone soundcards. 5% cpu useage vs 12% equates maybe a few frames per second, and that would be stretching it.

    I really doubt this is the issue. We are talking about Ultima Online. Only concern may be the audio, but I doubt it.

    Check the system requirements:

    * perating System:
    o Windows XP
    o Windows 98
    * CPU:400 MHz Intel Pentium II for 2D version
    o 500 MHz for 3D version
    * RAM: 128 MB

    * CD/DVD-Rom Speed: 4x
    * Hard Drive Space: 1.5 GB free hard disk space plus space for saved character profiles, Windows swap-file, and DirectX 9.
    * Video: 8 MB video card with DirectX 9.0 compatible driver for 2D version
    o 32 MB Direct3D capable video card for 3D version.
    * Sound: DirectX 9.0 compatible sound card

    * Keyboard
    * Mouse
    * Internet Connection: 56.6 Kbps or better

    Things I'd do:

    1. Update all drivers, video and sound.
    2. Defrag.
    3. Make sure I am rid of the spyware. Check our malware forum for assistance there.

    well all vid drivers are updated. and bios and motherboard driver updating is dangerous .but besides that dont know what else to update. defragged yesterday. and i have no spyware or malware left on this machine .i get rid of it with spyware sweeper

    You can't rely on one program alone, but all I can do is deliver the message.

    Updating motherboard drivers is about as as dangerous as updating your video drivers...

    BIOS updates aren't driver updates, I'd never reccomend that.

    Did you update your sound drivers?

    Personally I never go by system requirements...I've learned by experience that not even those are accurate. You could get a game that meet you're system you try and play it...and you realize you're system isn't able to handle the game as well as one thought.

    But as Adrynalyne said, I would check the malware section, either that or you have some extra programs running that shouldn't be.

    Ultima Online has been around since 1995. Trust me, those requirements aren't far off. I used to play it on a Pentium-60 and an S3 Trio. No joke ;)

    Way I look at it, A little boost in performance is as good as any, Alot better than not, You know?

    EDIT: It's probably just the game then (I've never played Ultima-Online, So not sure where it stands graphically) Alot of these MMO's out there just lag cause of high capacity of people

  21. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    You could spend extra money on other things, and give yourself a larger performance boost ;)

    Save 100 bucks (or more), put it towards the cost of CPU instead of a sound card.

    Its all preference, of course. Having a dual core CPU myself, cpu useage never is an issue for me.

    I mean, if you really want to get critical about it, unplug all your USB devices and use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, because PS/2 uses less cpu cycles than USB.

    A good read on CPU usage of Audigy 2, 4, and onboard audio.

    Not as much difference as you might think, unless they are trying to emulate EAX and whatnot, which has to be processed by software.

    Now were past the hardware stuff :) I guess its onto software, sounds like your net connection is fine so what else could be slowing this game, Malware, as Adryn said dont just rely on one app so run through the guides in the malware forum,

    also what Firewall you have, also known to slow some games unless you add the games ports to the firewall, iirc that support info I posted earlier mentioned this, or turn off your FW to test.

    someone said they lost a motherboard through updating the motherboard drivers so..not going to do that. i dont have another 150 to buy another motherboard.

    or am I just screwed till i get aloan of 2 grand to buy another vid card. a new motherboard and new everything?

    Turn off Yahoo and MSN while playing no wonder you lag...They eat up alot of bandwidth...

    Keep you're Firewall and spysweeper on...unless you do want Malware issues.
