I posted this in the software forum but they asked me to come here and post it again and get a clean bill of health from the experts in this forum before they can help me any further in the other forum. I followed all of the instructions in the malware READ ME FIRST post and all the scans came back clean except for one item in MalwareBytes called Trymedia. I quarantined it and then rebooted and continued with the rest of the steps. Everything else is clean. I didn't know if I should include all of those logs or not because they all came back clean with no detections, so I'm just attaching the MalwareBytes log for now.

Here is my original post from the Software forum:

This has been going on for few months. I've posted about this before but nobody replied & I can't find a preexisting thread that provides a solution. Windows 8 just suddenly started freezing and lagging really really bad. But now it takes awhile for folders to load pictures or even to open regular folders without pictures. My folders are just not that full and shouldn't be taking so long to load up. It happens even with folders that just have a few text files in them. Everything seems to be hanging up on something. Even when I'm online, it takes forever to buffer a video (and when the video does load, it's choppy and sticks) or it's freezing and/ or lagging just to open a message with ONE picture attached. It takes some time for all the tiny icons to load on a regular internet page. It's like I suddenly have a super slow connection like Dial up!! None of the other computers in the house are having this problem.

And now a new problem has come up, when I try to uninstall something, it says it's uninstalled but it doesn't remove it from the computer. The icon stays on the desktop and when I click on it, it loads up the program like it was never uninstalled. But it's no longer in the control panel Add/Remove programs. So now I can't even try to uninstall it AGAIN because it's not in the control panel for me to do it. It makes no sense. And then if I have some pictures on my desktop and I go to delete them, they say they are deleted but they are still sitting right there on my desktop like nothing happened. I have to restart the computer for them to be gone. But the uninstalled programs still stay intact even after numerous reboots. Same thing when I am going through email online, if I delete a bunch of emails, it still shows them there until I restart the computer or if I log out and then log back in. This is very strange and it's never happened before.

There are lots of little things that are adding up to make a really big difference and the computer is becoming more and more unusable. I know there's some kind of pattern going on here to WHAT could be causing this but I am not trained in computers in any way so I have no idea what it could be. All I know is that NONE OF THIS HAPPENED BEFORE!! Everything loaded up fast, so fast that I couldn't even tell it had to buffer. And offline, my folders opened easily and loaded up quickly. When I went to uninstall something through Add/Remove programs in the control panel, it was gone immediately. When I deleted pictures, they were gone the second I pressed delete. There was no lagging of any kind. Nothing ever froze up. It was a truly awesome computer that ran beautifully with no problems for almost 8 months straight out of the box. It was fast! Everything online ran smoothly and there was never choppy video playback or videos that wouldn't even load at all. Now everything is slow and choppy and just plan freezes up. Sometimes I can't even get a video to come up. It just stays stuck in a buffer zone. This happens even when the video is a normal file OFFLINE and I'm just trying to load it up to watch it. For example, family videos taken with my camera and then transferred directly to my desktop, will still act like they are hung up or they load up but it takes a while for them to open up. Even small 10 second videos. So I am having problems BOTH online and offline. The computer is slow everywhere now. The folders all lag when they are being opened. Sometimes I cannot ever open them without restarting my computer. Whatever is wrong with my pc is affecting it's performance all the way around. It's not just offline issues but online issues as well. There's hardly anything even installed on this pc. So there's nothing weighing it down. I have no clue what went wrong!! :(

I've restored it to factory settings multiple times and nothing gets better. This computer is only a year old and it was bought brand new!! Then it installed windows 8.1 ON IT'S OWN about a month after it starting acting up. I never pressed any allow buttons to upgrade my windows 8.0 to 8.1. I've been DENYING the upgrade since 8.1 came out. And now my computer went and did it anyway all on it's own WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. It really pissed me off!! :mad I've scanned for viruses and nothing comes up. I only have Norton so I don't know if that's bad protection or not. But it says I'm clear. :confused

( I did, however, run the malware removal steps in the "read me first" post here in this malware removal forum and it came back clean except for that one item which was quarantined)

So since it upgraded to 8.1 all by itself, the only thing that got better was that now I can click on the power button and it will actually bring up the options to either Restart or Shut down. Before 8.1 installed, windows 8.0 was lagging so badly that it wouldn't even show me the options to shut it down. I had to always press Cntrl Alt and Delete to shut down my computer properly. But since windows 8.1. installed, that is the ONLY thing that fixed it self. Now I can click on the power button and the shut down/restart options show up. But they sure didn't work before. That was the first thing that went wrong when the computer started to behave poorly. Then it just sort of snowballed from there. But the Windows 8.1 upgrade fixed that particular problem. Everything else is still lagging and freezing up.

What could cause this to happen so suddenly? I'm very frustrated because I've scoured the internet for the last few months looking for a solution but I cannot find one. I was surprised I couldn't find one here. I was even more shocked that nobody at all replied to my last post a few months ago when this all started happening. This is the first time EVER that I've not been able to get a computer issue solved here on this board. :( So that must mean that this is a really weird problem to fix and I'm starting to lose hope that I will find a solution. :( But I haven't totally lost faith yet! I know there's a bunch of talented people reading these posts so I am hoping that there's still a chance that somebody will see whatever this pattern is and be able to suggest solutions. ;)

Anyway, I would appreciate ANY help you can offer. I can't afford to bring the computer to repair store so I am trying to locate and fix the problem on my own. I'm not having any luck so far and I really really need to get this computer working properly. I can't believe it's crapping out on me like this when it's still so young!! :(

    Please help me.

Thank you for your time! :)

    I have a Lenovo H520
    System Model 10094
    64-bit Operating System
    x64-based Processor
    Windows_ 8.1 _ 64 Bit
    Intel Core i5-3330 CPU @ 3.00GHz
8.00 GB Installed Ram (7.89 GB usable)

    P.S.
I have definitely checked all the vents in the computer and everything is clean and open. No accumulated dust or other debris is in the vents or fans. My computer stays in an air conditioned room with a constantly running ceiling fan. It sits on top of my desk in an open area and is not in a tight confined space. I never have open windows in this room so the computer is not subjected to the outside environment in any way. I regularly clean out dust with compressed cans of air. The inside of the computer is clean.

I have attached a screen shot of what was in that folder you asked about.

I have also deleted the Trymedia folder as you requested.

Thank you for your help with this matter. I truly appreciate it. :) The Software Forum wants to make sure my computer is free of malware and has a clean bill of health from the Malware Forum before they take steps towards attempting to find a solution to my computer problem. So thank you so much for taking the time to help me get that clean bill of health. ;)

Hmm... The online virus scanners detect nothing on one of those files I researched, but I'd be interested in taking a closer look to see what it belongs to.

Could you please get this: 446cd79e.dll into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

I pasted what you posted into the run box and a black window flashed up really quickly afterwards and then was gone. It was so fast, I couldn't even see what it was. And then I went into the C: drive to get the log but there is nothing called "collect.zip".

Did I do something wrong? :confused

    Thank you. ;)
    I attached the file. :)

Also, on a side note that might be important, back a few months ago (right around the time the computer started acting up, I'm not sure if it was right before or right after but it was in that general time frame) I had gone to my twitter account. One of the people I followed had gotten hacked and the person hacking them was releasing all these images and things. Like really fast posting one after another. Then all of a sudden my browser opened up a new tab all by itself and it said I needed to download some missing software. It obviously looked suspicious so I didn't do it. I did a scan and nothing came up, so I thought I was good.

But then every couple hours, out of no where, the tab would open again and another warning to download some other needed software. But I never downloaded anything. I wanted to know what was happening with these tabs opening up on their own, so I looked up the web address of the new tab (because it was obviously not the correct one from a trusted site about new drivers or whatever) and when I looked it up, I found out that it was a part of some kind of malware and that you had to go through all these steps to remove it. I tried to start with step one, by removing it from the add/remove programs in control panel but the file I was supposed to remove wasn't even there.

And nothing came up with Norton. I tried the other steps next but I could never find the infected folder. So I just gave up and figured that I didn't have the malware. But I unfollowed the person on twitter that got hacked, just in case it was somehow connected and not just weird timing. But the new tab kept continuing to open up at least 2 times a day for like 2 weeks. I kept trying to re-scan it each time but nothing was ever found. I even used the malwarebytes program and it didn't find anything either. So I just went ahead and restored the computer to factory settings again and I thought it wiped everything clean because it just eventually stopped happening and I totally forgot about it. Until now. Do you think that could have been something that might have contributed to my computer acting up so badly now? I'm sorry I didn't mention it sooner. :( It had totally escaped my mind until we started looking at these folders more closely. ;)

I don't remember what the name of the malware was. :( Maybe it was that trymedia folder you had me delete earlier.

but so far, nothing has improved my computer problem. Everything is still acting up. So maybe that trymedia folder wasn't the culprit after all. I don't know what to think actually. LoL. I'm not very educated in computers so I really don't even have the training to speculate, so I'm gonna stop trying. LoL!!

Thank you again for all of your time and help!! :)

Ok, I deleted C:\ProgramData\54F3DE4E-B7BA-4EBD-8B3B-385D272CC583 like you requested. I don't seem to have run into any problems after deleting it. I even ran CCleaner again afterwards to make sure everything was cleaned up. Seems to be all good. ;) And when I went back into the ProgramData folder to check to make sure it was really deleted, the folder is definitely gone.

BUT now the Trymedia folder is right back again. :(

What should I do about that? Delete it again? :confused

Ok, I deleted and rebooted and it's gone for now. But last time, it was gone for a day or two before it showed up again. When it came back, it was dated 11/14/14 so it must have shown up early this morning. But as of now, it's not showing up. It seems to be deleted. ;)

Yes, I have a Nikon camera. But I don't do much with it on my computer except I put the memory card from the camera into the computer slot to upload my pictures to a folder on my desktop. But other than that, I don't use anything that says Nikon on my computer. And I don't ever connect the camera directly to my computer. I just take out the memory card to take the pictures out and that's it. Like, I don't use any kind of software from Nikon, not even to edit or organize my pictures or anything. ;)

Re: Was told to come here & get clean bill of health first ~PC suddenly freezes & lag

    What this one?

    C:\ProgramData\Trymedia

    Do this:

    SystemLook

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below appropriate for your operating system and save it to your Desktop.
    Download 32 Bit
    Download 64 Bit

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :folderfind
      Trymedia
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

    ---------------

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code:
    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\Trymedia
    C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now re run Systemlook again exactly as before and attach log.

Here is a snapshot of the TRYMEDIA folder. There are multiple folders with files in them. And then there's this one file under all of those folders. I am not sure which file to choose for you. Do you want the one shown in this picture or would you like me to open up one of those folders and grab one of the files in there?

Re: Was told to come here & get clean bill of health first ~PC suddenly freezes & lag

The reason this is coming back has been in newfiles.txt since the beginning. ;) TryMedia is where the below two games came from

    Farm Makeover Double Pack
    Rescue Team 4

Since they are still installed, this folder comes back. ;)

And then one of the more recent newfiles.txt that shows the logs from OTM fixes also shows you these ( scroll to the right to see the re highlight ):
    Code:
    ----a-w 77,484 2014-11-15 18:34:14 C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\11152014_171546\C_ProgramData\Trymedia\streaming\5fa83fd9b0fb66fa9619b1a6ae55d56e-[B][SIZE=4][COLOR=red]farmmakeoverdoublepack-[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]58d7.rfsindex
    ----a-w 3,829 2014-11-15 10:13:11 C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\11152014_171546\C_ProgramData\Trymedia\streaming\e55e1cd4e5529d1632e08e4a4aba1c89-[B][SIZE=4][COLOR=red]rescueteam4[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]-56f8.rfsindex
So if you want to keep/play these games then you will have to keep the TryMedia folder too. Adware sponsored software.

Ok, I guess that makes sense because I just downloaded the Farm Makeover Trial not too long ago while we were working on this issue. But I just *bought* Rescue Team 4 which means there shouldn't be any adware support included anymore with that particular game. I'm gonna uninstall the Farm Makeover Demo (if my PC will let me, it's not been letting me uninstall all of the games lately.. I always have a 50/50 chance with uninstalls.) and see what happens. But Rescue Team 4 was a demo all this time and it was only just yesterday when I officially bought it. Maybe that's the culprit. But it shouldn't be needing that Trymedia folder anymore because it shouldn't be adware supported now that it's officially bought and not just a trial, no? Plus I'm deleting Farm Makeover now.

I'll let you know what happens...

Because my computer is still acting up really really badly. :( Now I can't even get the side menu to come out on Windows 8.1 when you move your mouse all the way to the right of the screen. So I can't even shut it down without pressing the windows key on my keyboard to pull up the start menu and then I find the shut down button that way. And my screen saver won't turn off right away when I move my mouse or keyboard. It freezes up and takes a good full minute before it will unfreeze and go back to the desktop. So there's some serious issues still going on as well as all of the original issues I posted about in the first post and I am deseperate to fix them. :cry

Thank you so much for helping me to locate malware. I was really hoping it was that TRYMEDIA folder that was the culprit of all my computer's malfunctions but obviously it's something else. It makes no sense because the computer is only a year old and I only store family pictures, home movies and Gamehouse games on it. I have no clue what could have caused it to suddenly start acting up like this.

That's why I was hoping we could blame it on malware and then get rid of it and then everything would be happy times again! :drool
But no such luck this time. :(

So before I head back over to the software forum, can I tell them that I have a clean bill of health from this forum? ;)

Thanks again for all of your help!! I truly truly appreciate it!!! :)

I'm sorry but you are not having malware problems. You weren't even when you first posted in the Malware Forum as Kestrel13! pointed out after seeing your first logs. The TryMedia stuff is just adware supported trial ware.

You should return to the Software Forum for your problems with Windows.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    3. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much for those steps. I did everything listed. :)

I also went to the link you suggested to keep myself protected for the future. But I am EXTREMELY confused by all of the choices of software to use to protect my computer. :(

In the software forum, I was asked by somebody to uninstall my Norton Security Suite so I did that. But now I am only protected by whatever Windows 8.1. automatically has on my system. Is that enough? Do you have any recommendations on the software I should download and install and keep running in the background?

Right now I have Ccleaner and MalwareBytes still loaded up. Should I keep those or remove them? And I think Windows Defender because that's what it defaulted to when I removed Norton. Should I leave it at this? Or should I add more from that long list of software offered in that link you provided?

I'm sorry to be asking, what is probably an obvious question, but I really don't know anything about computers and I just want to stay protected in the best possible way, but what would those kind of programs be? :confused

Is there anything else from the list on that link that I should download?
I've been meaning to ask somebody for awhile now about what kind of protection I should have all the way around for my computer and now I figured it's a good time to ask. ;)

Again, thank you SO much for your time and effort!! It means so very much to me!!
    You have been AWESOME!!:heart:heart:heart:heart

Should I post my last question in a new thread? Does it not belong here? :confused
It's been two days and there hasn't been a response. :(

I've been extremely busy. Slap bang in middle of a house move.

Who?! Was this paid for software??

Yes, most of your questions now belong in the software forum. :)

Oh!! I'm soooo sorry!! I didn't mean for you to drop everything and answer my question. :( I feel horrible that it came off that way!! :( Please forgive me for that coming off so rude and inconsiderate. :(

I was thinking that it was a question open to everybody, not just you, and I was mostly just trying to find out if it was a question meant for this forum now. I'm really sorry that it came off differently. I need to pay closer attention to how I word things. ;)

The one person in the Software forum that is kinda helping me with my computer problem is the one who told me to uninstall my Norton Security Suite. Yes, my Norton Security Software is paid for software that I get from my internet service provider. He told me to uninstall it and because I trust this forum so much and nobody else was saying anything in the post, I listened to him and uninstalled it. I'm THAT desperate to get some help for this computer problem. :(

But nothing is really happening in that forum that is helping me so maybe I need to install it back in, huh?

I feel really stupid now. :(

Also, do you mean the question about what kind of software from that link you posted isn't good for this forum? That one should go in the software forum too? I just want to be sure to put everything where it belongs. ;) I don't want to break any rules or offend anybody cuz I love this board. It has helped me thru many problems in the past. ;)

Again, I'm sorry for sounding like I was rushing you. <3 <3

What Kestrel13! was saying is that all non-malware removal related issues/questions should be posted in the Software Forum.
