If you are on the sharp pointy end of progress, you will always pay top dollar.
Look at the introduction of anything and the price is always steeper than the previous model, be it RAM, big LCD monitors, high definition TV's, motherboards, graphic cards, etc.
Anything that "they" plug as bigger, better, faster, must have, are rarely cheaper than the previous model.

You're probably going to have to grin and bear it, part out your hard earned $$$$, or settle for lesser specs. :p Bazza

Sooo...you're saying that the average price of the "good stuff" is up around $50-$150? In how many years are you talking? You're right; it's probably not inline with inflation, but everyone wants more for less.

The cost will go down when something bigger and better hits the shelves.

I had a user (not much older than myself) recalling how he used to spend $250 on 16MB of RAM. That's hardly "good stuff" anymore.

Also, is 2GB the amount of RAM you're going to stick with, or are you going for even more? You might be better off spending less on 2 sticks of 1GB RAM, and putting them in dual-channel mode, and increasing your memory's bandwidth. (if 2GB is where you're capping out) Also know that 4GB is the limit for a 32 bit version of WinXP. You won't be able to have a pagefile (not that you should need it), or any audio/video ram, as they all count towards this total.

for one if you install 4gb's of ram into your board, any A64 cpu with all 4 slots filled will drop to 2t timings. 2nd of all XP pro can only use 2gb's you have to get a special patch to use the full 4gb. 32bit its self can only adress 4gb's of ram, thats why we went to 64bit in the first place. Now Windows 64 can address 8gb and use 4gb.

The XPS stuff is top dollar, also consider the market is shifting towards DDR2 and moving from DDR1 as such DDR1 should start to come back down and DDR2 will raise in price. I myself am running DDR2 667 and im quite happy.

It's not heaps expensive actually.... I've always wondered why Video Cards are advancing so quickly compared with everything else (mainly CPUs). And how come there is no DDR3 RAM yet? :(

Yeah I saw that, but it's not to be a hit.... Like most things good.

I'd say Apple would start using it though, they always seem to use the latest gadgets.

Theres cheap value ram out there for 2 x1=2 gigs that you can get from 180-200$ dollars.

The best thing about ram is that you buy once 2-3gigs and you will be fine for 3-4 years.

As oppossed to everything else you need to update every 1-2 years=)

I have seen 2GB of 800Mhz RAM for under 350 bucks at some of those Asian computer markets.

Dude! That's not bad! $158 for a 1GB stick of high-frequency RAM with sweet timings is an average price. Just what are you comparing this to?

    I read this:

    -AND-
So, I'm really finding it hard to see where you are coming from. This RAM isn't extraordinarily expensive at all. Its sounding more and more like you're just pissed that you missed a sale.

I bought 2x1 gig of Corsair XMS2 5400C4 Ram 3 weeks ago for $156 after a $30 rebate from Zipzoomfly. The same ram now sells for $235 after the same $30 rebate. I should have invested in the ram companies with this kind of price increase.

Hmmm better check this again XP Pro will address I think it was 187gb of RAM! I am running a full 4gb of EEC RAM and when I upgraded from 2 to 4 had to do nothing but turn the computer on and use it.

Funny I remember very well calling all over town to try to find 64k of RAM and then when I found it I raced down and layed out $179 for it, and yes that was 64k not mb or gb but k!

    This might help
