    Hello.

Awhile back, I got a plethora of rootkits and viruses on my laptop. The computer's functional, but not yet clean. I have 45 hidden objects, which I accidentally tried to put on my desktop via a USB storage unit. My laptop will not connect to a wireless signal. It can read the signal, it thinks it connects, but it never does.

I believe that if I could get the updates for the software that I installed, I could probably finish cleaning my latptop. Now, my computer has a dial-up connecter--no ethernet cable plugin, so I can't plug it into the cable modem. What would you recommend doing to connect the laptop to the Internet, without risking infecting my desktop? Is there a product that converts ethernet to USB? Should I try installing a wireless adapter--which I use for my desktop, and do not want infected?

    Thanks!

Hidden objects do not mean they are infections. If you need help you need to help us help you by running the below.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only RogueKiller and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run the rest of the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions on the infected account.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Yes, I followed all of those steps months ago. They got my really bad-off computer working again (had 2 rootkits and some viruses). However, I could not connect to the Internet with it to download the updates for these programs, and some programs required that they be downloaded and installed on one computer, meaning I could not run every program listed. I can't remember which didn't work right now (I did this in February).

My question is what is the best way to try to connect to the Internet if the LAN adapter isn't working (probably as a result of malware)? I have no ethernet port on the laptop (the port is for dial-up, and I don't have a dial-up modem). Is there an ethernet-dial-up adapter of some sort that I can purchase so I can plug my laptop directly into the modem to get anti-virus/anti-rootkit/anti-malware updates? Or, would it be okay to run a wireless adapter through my laptop--the adapter I use for another computer, and I don't know if putting it into a potentially still-infected computer would result in infecting the adapter.

I hope this clarifies what I was asking.

We cannot answer that without seeing the logs because we don't know exactly what your problem is. The logs help us figure that out.

The you need to use another PC to get the programs and copy them to this PC to perform the scans. The copy the logs back off this problem PC to the second PC ( which you must be using to connect here ) and upload the logs.

    It should be fine.
