I got this Compaq presario SR 1800 NX yesterday delivered to me from ebay. it came with no operating system or drivers. PC is designed for windows xp.
It's a 3.06 ghz celeron D, 512 ram, 100gb hard drive. I installed Windows XP Pro SP2. I got all the updates, I went to windows to verify I got all the updates.. Everything works except for no sound. I checked the device manager. Under sound, video, game controllers, I have audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture, media control, video codecs listed. I do have other devices, with PCI device with ??! listed beside them. I have updated the chipset driver and installed the windows xp drivers for my Realtek ALC 883 8 channel high def audio codec. I have the latest direct x 9.0c installed with no luck. The on board audio is enabled in bios. Windows auto is automatically started in services. I'm at witts end. My mobo is ASUS P5rc-la. anything else I can try?

    Try this:
    1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" (That would be in Device Manager>System)
    2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it: KB835221 Hotfix http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...tem=pv-22533-1
    3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
    4. After this you should be able to install Realtek drivers.
This is the HP original driver, if you already don't have it.
    sp26666.exe

sound works! the microsoft uaa bus driver for high definition audio driver was missing under device manager in system devices. I reinstalled and restarted. everything works perfectly now. I'm relieved!
