I am interested in burning movies coming in via the net or DVD.

I have had limited success but would like an experts view on the best way to do this and the best software to use.

I have been getting AVI files from UTorrent and limewire which I tried to convert with CYBERLINKS Power Producer 3. PP3 freezes halfway through trying to convert (I don't know if I have a dud or what) so I found and have been using SOTHINK MOVIE DVD MAKER.

I have also attempted burning DVDs using dvd shrink, but it nowdays has trouble with some new software and doesn't do the business. When DVD shrink has failed I have run DVDfab HD Decryptor4 and had some success with that though I have had problems with some newer DVDs.
    ;)

For converting AVI files to DVD for your home DVD player, try DVDFlick. It's free, fairly quick depending on your PC hardware, and I have burned over 100 files using it without a bad burn... NOT ONE!
DVD Flick http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD_Flick_d5530.html It does the converting, burning, everything. Just put a blank DVD in the DVD burner, launch the program, add the file, check some settings (the defaults are fine 99% of the time) and click Create DVD. Go have a beer or 3, and that's it! It's best to turn off any screen savers or anything else that may use CPU resources whilst converting. Here's the link to the PDF how-to guide: http://www.dvdflick.net/guide.php
If you don't mind paying for software, WinAVI is very fast, and produces excellent results http://www.winavi.com/en/video-converter/video-converter.htm
Another good paid product is ConvertX http://www.majorgeeks.com/ConvertXToDVD_2_d4689.html There is (or used to be) a free version of this program, but I don't think it is still available....
If you need to back up your home DVD collection, try using DVDFab http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVDFab_HD_Decrypter_d5168.html It will copy the movie to your hard drive for personal archival back ups....

I am using DVD fab Decryptor freeware and am having problems with making a backup copy. I have the latest version but it is unable to deal with the latest software, is there any other idiot proof guides to doing this before using dvd shrink? Is there any superior freeware available either the has shrink built in?

 I have no idea what that means. :confused

I have never had any troubles with DVDFab. I usually select "Main Movie" so it will fit on a regular DVD. Otherwise the files end up being like 8gb+. If you use Main Movie, it will fit on a standard DVD. You can also save space by not ripping all the audio tracks. If you select just the English audio stream, the resulting files will be a bit smaller. You can also run the files through AutoGK or Dr.DivX if you have a DivX compatible DVD player. They have options for custom sizes so a movie can fit on one CD, or you can put up to 6 movies on one DVD....

The trouble i'm having is only on some new dvds, I will re try one and show you what it says if that is cool?. It seems to be some of the latest dvds that have the problem.

It comes up "DVDfab encounters a reading error(maybe caused by copy protection)which can be removed by using path player, the technology we employed in DVDfab. Please note when path player is enabled a DVD may take up to several minutes. Would you like to restart DVDfab to enable pathplayer for this dvd? then yes/no.

I went through the customize settings and made sure path player was enabled but it goes through the process and come up "error while reading" giving me various options eg. retry which never works.

    Any ideas???????

OK... thanks for clearing that up for me ;) It's because the newest DVDs use a new protection scheme not yet implemented in DVDFab. Here's a link to the DVDFab forums at CDFreaks... you should be able to find some help there. Also check the DVDFab home page for a possible updated version....

I've tried it all today, downloaded anydvd and tried using that with dvd shrink/half a dozen others( I downloaded free trial of dvdclone which is supposed to run in conjunction with anydvd but it expired immediately). Got the latest dvd43 and had no luck using dvd shrink with that either.

I'm assuming now that the latest encrypted dvds are at the present moment safe from the latest freeware decryption software.

I have had luck with some dvds but a few are above the bar and I'd just like to know why even if I can't back up the dvds so I can avoid purchasing them.

It's no good having no back up facility as I'm hopeless with dvds and scratch the arse off of them in a week.
    :confused

Ps thanks for the help dlb, pm should be working
