Alright, so I decided to turn my pc on today and It turned on for rougly 2 seconds then switched off again, I tried several times and it did this at different intervals. I opened the computer and took out the battery for 5 minutes and put it back, the computer still wouldnt start up so I went out and bought a new PSU and replaced it, still the same of shutting down after 2 or more seconds. So it is not the PSU, I even took out all the RAM and the other drives such as the graphics and the harddisk but it still started up for a bit then shut down. Nothing has come up on the screen. I noticed that when I banged my computer case a couple of times the pc came back on again then switched off. I also noticed that bending the motherboard exactly where the big powercable connects to makes it work. Does this mean my motherbaord is damaged? I have not done anything to it and suddenly after I switched it off normally the other day it doesnt want to start up today.

Please help me, I am going to go out and buy a new motherboard tommorow! I dont think its the cpu, I looked at it and there are no marks or anything, I also removed all the dust.

Basically I only had the essentials on the pc (the cpu, the fan and the psu) and it seemed to work when I bend the motherboard or press down on the area where the big powercable connects from the psu to the motherboard.

    Thanks!:(

If it works when you manipulate the MB then you probably have a bad connection somewhere on the board. For most of us without experience yes the board is bad. However if you had the proper testing tools then you could probably locate and fix the problem. I know this doesn't help you much, it's just my opinion.

Whats really funny is that I came back to my dorm and I hooked my pc up again to the psu and put the battery back in and now it seems to work just fine. Tried restarting it a few times and it works fine!

Glad it's working for you . i would still back up everything you need onto external HD or a dvd that way if it finally goes you will still have your data

JFYI.....when you take the CMOS battery out, to completely reset the cmos memory.....leave it out for at least 20 minutes....not five min'.
Also make sure that all power is removed from the system.

I hope that you bought a BIGGER psu. (?)
That's a real problem these days..... PC's with TOO SMALL of a PSU.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

it sounds like you have a dry solder joint/joints, take a look over the board and look for hairline cracks in the solder joints especially underneath the power connector.

The motherboard was the problem! I bought the same motherboard and replaced it and it works just fine now :) I will try and give back my old motherboard as faulty so maybe I will get a free motherboard as they are exactly the same:-D
