If you really cannot run anything to provide us information that we need to perform a proper diagnosis, your option would be to use another PC to try create one or more of the below CDs to boot from that allow you to run scans and perform many other tasks without Windows even being loaded. Sometimes this can help to get you started when all else fails. They can even help in cases where a previous scan may have removed something that resulted in your PC being unbootable.

You're welcome. :) Best of luck to you. For without you being up and running I cannot even begin to help with malware removal.

ran the AVG boot recovery - it did not find any problems.
also ran the bitdefender but I cannot navigate thru the menu as there is no mouse (laptop) or keyboard, ie; nothing is selectable

    any other clues???

You might want to try creating this disc so you can at least get your files and data off the hard drive in case you need to reformat:

    UBCD4Win

If they do not have a PC currently running Windows and also their boot CD, they cannot create this disk. ;)
A Linux based disk may be a better better solution if backing up data is the goal.

If you have another computer, which I assume you do since you are creating the other discs, you could run the Linux OS as a live environment (in other words, don't install it - just run it from the optical drive).

    Latest:
tried restore from F8 startup to earliest point possible as still cannot get into windows safe mode, got this error:
System Restore Failed while deleting this DIR: d:\ProgramData\!SASCORE\Applogs\SASCORE - 3-30-2011 (7-12-59).53.SDB
    Unspecified error during restore (0x80070770)

    Startup Repair found:
    Root cause found;
System volume is on disk is corrupt
Repair action failed: File system repair (chkdsk)
Result: Completed Successfully. Error code = 0x0
    *no other errors during test

there doesn't seem to be an option to totally reinstall windows
    Appreciate any help

I think your only recourse now is a reformat and clean install, that is assuming the hard drive is not faulty.

Final update...(fingers crossed). Have formatted drive and have loaded Ubuntu. I am typing this from my new Ubuntu environment :-D.
So as far as I got, I had a corrupt volume and the only time I got that information was after running the UBCD4win which still didn't correct anything, so I took a dive - we may never know what hit me or how to fix it but thankfully whatever it was is gone.
I would like to thank Satrow, TimW, Kestrel13 and Chaslang for all of their help - YOU GUYS ROCK!
Now I have to learn how to navigate around a new operating system and find out what the hell is this fuss is about. Though new to Ubuntu, I think I am sold already, Windows begone!!
    Once again, thank you all:wave
