Administrative rights on MG

I had a sudden thought, don't get them most of the time! lol but I've noticed that some members on MG, usually the most helpful ones and the ones with more posts, have sort of administrative rights so they can close threads or give other users new titles. Are there any other amazingly cool things that these members can do, I think Halo, Adynalyne and Kodo have them, does anyone else have them???
Also, how did these members get these rights, do they just have to be really brainey and know everything???? Or did major attitude give them a computer test to do and if they passed it they got the rights??!!!!

Maybe they didn't get the rights, maybe they are just so brainy and smart they figured out a way to do it anyway! :p

    j/k :D

At the bottom of the forum index page is a link for forum leaders who are the admins and moderators of MG. It has nothing to do with post counts or anything like that...most of us have been here a long time and were approached by MA to see if we wanted to help out as the need arose. Moderators and admins can close/edit threads or move them to the proper forums when needed with the exception being a moderator who can only moderate in a specific forum. Admins can ban members, mess with your titles/avatars/profile pics ;):D, moderate all forums, change post counts, set up user groups...yadda, yadda...so beware!;) LOL

LOL. No you don't. It's mostly a lot of hard work, and frequently frustrating, as a lot of posters that have their posts modified or removed can get pretty nasty about it. MG tries to run a family-friendly and civil site, and the mods are all VERY fair and level-headed. They work hard to keep the site clean and civil. It's a thankless job.

And no, I'm not a mod, despite being an old-timer. ;)

G.T. is absolutely right...it's a thankless volunteer job that is often more stressful than anything you could do in your actual life.

Besides...odd things tend to happen to people who ask to be one here at MG, especially new people.

(and no, I'm not one here, either...but I am at another site, and have been at several different sites over the years)

lol a stressful job eh????? hmmmmm is it just the fact that you have to keep an eye on everything that goes on and make sure nothing goes wrong or out of hand then?

As those other folks said, it's delicate work; you have to put your own "take" on things aside, and approach every post without ego or prejudice; and develop a thick skin (because you'll need it); and keep in mind that you're a direct reflection on the whole site, as well as being sensitive to any and every person that may see a post. Sound fun?

I don't know what their responsibilities are here, but where I moderate:
Read all posts in all forums to make sure they comply with the rules.
Edit/delete posts/threads which do not comply with the rules.
Split threads that have wandered too far off topic, nudge those threads back on topic that can still be salvaged before splitting.
Follow all posted links to make sure they don't lead to porn, warez, or other illegal (or simply against the rules) sites.
Step in as necessary if fighting/name calling gets out of hand.
Warn users of bad behaviour, and if they still don't comply, ban them.
Move threads to the proper forum which have been posted in the wrong one by their creator.
Answer all questions (if possible) by members of the site regarding their accounts, our policies, and any technical issues they might have.
Serve as go-between when someone is having a problem in the buy/sell/hot deals section of the site if there are any issues.
If the site is slow, start/reply to threads to get conversations moving again.
Deal with people on a regular basis who call you names, call your family names, and in general treat you like crap because you dared do your job and reprimand them or edit their posts for non-compliance with the rules.

Added to that, as news editor:
Post news items of interest for the main site page at least twice per day (preferably morning and evening, but more often is best so there is always fresh content) from items submitted to the news inbox.
If there is not enough news submitted, track some down on the web for posting.

On average, it takes me about five hours a day just on that site, more if I have to go hunting for news. All volunteer. Still want to do it? ;)

Sounds fun, but surely the more administrators you have, the less work required for each one????

You'd think so...but no. Much like with every other job, not everyone DOES their job. Which leaves the remaining few to pick up the slack. And not everyone is an administrator (we have two admins and 8 mods). Moderators have less power than administrators do (what I described was just moderators, add about ten more things and you'll have the admins).

As for how you get to be one...they'll ask you, do NOT ask them. Do not bother them repeatedly about it. Do not attempt to become a moderator at a site if you've been a member only a short time. The sites owners/administrators know exactly how many people they need in what areas to run the site efficiently, they don't need people bugging them all the time to become one of them.

I got my job because someone was going on vacation and needed someone to cover for him, and I had impressed him as a good candidate. He convinced the site's owner, and I was in. Then, after I had proven myself capable, my duties were expanded over time.

And "fun" is hardly the word for it. If you think it's "fun", then you've not got the right temperment for the position. ;)

I've moderated a board before, and its pretty nasty stuff. It's worse when the people you're moderating know you IRL as well... you start to get a rather bad reputation very quickly.

I would do it if I had the time. I'm not that bad at it, really, provided my personal life doesn't get too entangled with it.
