Hope you all had a happy new year! I have a question. I have a box that comes up right before Windows XP opens. It says "userinit.exe" in the top left corner of the box. Then "There is no disk in the drive \DEVICE\HARDDISK3\DR4." In the bottom of the box it says, "Cancel, Try Again, Continue". I can click on try again or continue 2 or 3 times and Windows XP will open and everything seems to run just fine. Are there any suggestions about how I can eliminate this situation? Am I missing a needed file? Thanks in advance!

userinit is a windows system file.

    Process File: userinit or userinit.exe
    Process Name: UserInit Process

    Description:
Userinit.exe is a key process in the Windows operating system. On boot-up it manages the different start up sequences needed, such as establishing network connection and starting up the Windows shell.

    Author: Microsoft Corp.
    Part Of: Windows

    System Process: Yes
    Background Process: Yes
    Uses Network: No
    Hardware Related: No
    Common Errors: N/A

Try checking your various startup items to see if there is something in the startup items that is trying to start from that location. If you don't find it that way try running a boot log to see if you can locate the item that way.

Last but only if you are real sure of what you are doing!
If you are comfortable working in the registry search for:
    "DEVICE\HARDDISK3\DR4" or for "userinit"
and see what you find. There may be an entry that you can correct or delete to get rid of the error.
If you are the LEAST BIT unsure of working with the registry DON'T DO this.
Find someone who can help you if you are unsure of what to do.

Click on Start then Run and type msconfig and the config menu opens. Click on startup and see if that item is mentioned as required to open in the startup sequence. If it is listed click on the tick to remove it. That should solve the problem
    Cheers
