I have the dreaded & annoying (and seemingly irremovable) ad.adserverplus.com popup in an IE window when firefox loads, and I hope to hell to get rid of the damn thing. What I have read up on it leads me to the conclusion that good knowledgeable folks' forums like yourselves is the nearest thing to salvation, and I can't read German too well either. I followed your site's procedures for malware removal precisely to no real luck (although I have removed some other potential nasties to which I was unawares), and on top of that damn thing I found a trojan zlob downloader on the BitDefender scan! F-ing Windows! F-ing roomates! I am not a complete newbie to this sort of thing, but I have been out of the game for a while, and don't exactly want to take a potentially devastating crack at solving this using your HJT tutorial - so I would appreciate all the help you're willing to dole out!

    Attached some logs here also.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You have a LOP infections!! But before we get started you need to go back and read step 3 of the READ ME again. You have AVG and Symantec installed. One must go now!

Also please follow the directions in the READ & RUN ME step 6 and attach a proper log from Bitdefender next time (if there is a next time). You did not attach what we requested. It is only a log summary and is of no use to us. It does not indicate where the problems were found nor does it indicate whether they are fixed. A proper log would have given us this information.

After uninstalling one of the antivirus programs do the below!

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also uninstall the CounterSpy trial from the READ & RUN ME. We are finished with it now.

Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bagsbuild] C:\DOCUME~1\HP_ADM~1\APPLIC~1\MEDIAR~1\Mode Intra Scr.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now locate the below folder and delete it if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\media ref jump

    Now run Ccleaner

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.
    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Great galldamn you're right! Excellent - I thought that freagin LOP was in place for the long haul. Sorry about the confusion w/ the BitDefender log, I don't rightly know where my head was at. I am glad I came here; this isn't some dog and pony show - it's the real deal! Thanks again. The source of the trojan.zlob files was BD picking up Norton's quarantine protocols; the oil and water alchemy of running multiple AV systems. I was guilty of that too although only because I want to see whether AVG or Norton is more reliable. Any suggestions? Oh, and on the same note, any suggestions on *free* incoming/outgoing firewall programs? This would be greatly appreciated, thanks again!

Attached are the revised logs you requested.

You should never install multiple AV programs at the same time. If you want to try another, you should uninstall (do not just try to disable, you cannot totally disable an AV program unless uninstalled) the first program and reboot before installing the second. As far as Norton is concerned, it is not on our recommended list since it is a massive resource hog, is always getting corrupted by malware, never uninstalls properly (much like malware, you have to manually remove it), and while it finds lots (not all) of problems it is not too good at fixing them. You also have to pay a bunch for it. AVG is very good especially for free and if you don't mind paying, you get even more in the pay version.

Everything we recommend, which will include firewalls, is in the link at the end of the below final steps.

    Your logs are clean now.

First delete these two left over folders from CounterSpy:
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
