OK my fellow geeks, I'm stuck on this one... Hoping I can get pointed in the right direction.

So I had issues with my windows 8.1 installation, but I knew I could basically go through the "upgrade" process again so I wouldn't loose any of my files... So I did so, everything was fine and naturally I had to do windows updates so I did... At said time it was getting late so I went to bed and figured I would worry about that in the morning... I woke up middle of the night, naturally my updates were done.. All I had to do was click reboot, so I did... Back to bed I go... My fiancee woke me up and said "you got a blue screen" ... so I got up and looked... Things were just in a endless reboot but I got access to the safe mode, I figured I accessed things once so maybe it was just a glitch and something didn't install properly but being able to access safe mode perhaps did fix things... Well as I rebooted it hit the endless reboot again... It did stop the endless reboot as it will show the windows 8.1 start up screen (the windows logo with the dots that show that it's loading) but after that the screen would go black... no desktop nothing... I can still hear my fans and my hard drive is working as my front light indicates that... but I get nothing.

I have fixed the mbr but still nothing, I prefer not to do a format because I'm not at home and I don't want to loose everything... I hooked up the hard drive from my computer to another computer (externally) and ran tests, it passed each test that I threw at it...

If someone can help me out it'd be great, because I'm at the point of having to take it in or buy a new pc cause I feel that something more major is wrong with it.

    Thanks in advance;
    Kennie

OK so as I said in previous post I fixed the mbr and still nothing...

I also ran the repair functions that you can access during boot by holding shift and pressing f8... I ran fix start up and it failed each time, I ran scannow it says it fixes stuff but it still won't let me into windows... through the windows install dvd I ran the system restore and that fails as it tells me it's because my antivirus is running... how am I suppose to turn off the antivirus if I can't access windows itself ?... that one is beyond me.

safe mode worked a twice, now I try and access it and the screen just goes black and does nothing more...

I've been trying to solve this problem since the 18th of this month and so far nothing, I would say I'm pulling my hair out but considering I shave my head unless I get a pair of tweezers it's not really possible since i got nothing to really grab lol

just finished doing a system restore as it failed again because of it claiming my antivirus is running, not sure how it can run considering i can't access windows...

I'm trying a few things I can think of or google, I had the thought of "clone" my installation so I can back it up to another computer and just do a fresh format so i can more or less copy my clone over that but I didn't think that would be how things would work... or i may just run into the problem again... which wouldn't help because I know to clone something would take a long time and if it's just going to go back to the way things are already it would bother me since I would feel like I wasted my time...

if you got any suggestions (besides formatting it...) I would love to hear them, since right now formatting is out of the question since I would loose everything I have. I normally do back things up but I'm away from home at this point in time...

    Thanks in advance
    Kennie

. I hooked up the hard drive from my computer to another computer (externally)

Since you can hook up your HDD to another computer. Save what files and programs you,
need.to that drive. Now format that drive with the computer that you save your files to, ( do not format when doing the install) When you put that drive back in you want it completely blank. Now install Win 8.1. when done transfer your files back using a memory stick.

This is called a clean install

    Hope this helps.

I bought the same memory stick from my local comp. store for only $20.00 and it is 256GB. There was also 1TB sticks for $80.00.

DOA - I made a image of my one drive as I'm hoping I can just format one of my drives and put win81 on it and just use the image to more or less get all my stuff back on it.

b1jqxk44 - I prefer not to format, I do know how to back up my own personal files but I wouldn't have any of my programs (except the freeware ones I use) that I can put on which would just give me a very basic computer with not much to do on it...

One other question for b1jqxk44 are you with Bell ?

its your name that made me question it... as for programs it doesn't really matter because i don't have my keys with me so they wouldn't be any good

Been reading Microsoft Support Forums, you have missing or corrupt system 32 files
You need to do a system refresh (from the Win 8.1 installation cd).

    1. insert cd, restart computer.
    2. press any key to continiue
    3. selest lang.
    4. repair this PC
    5. select refresh

All your files will be saved, but all your programs will be gone. This is the only way to fix the problem you have.

b1 - Thanks i was afraid that was the answer, which seems at this point my computer can just sit and collect dust until I get home... earlier today my backup drive crapped out on me so I can't back anything up.

At the very least, buy another backup drive.

There is no such that as having too many external hard drives to back things up to.

Plodr - I have 2 back up drives ... but sadly they're "at home" a place that I'm currently not...

Maybe this is a dumb question but can I clone my hard drive but not clone windows ? so I can install windows and if this makes any sense just to blanket my hard drive with all my software so i don't have to reinstall it ?
