My current book (which I'll finish tonight) is Dark Horse by Tami Hoag. It usually takes me about three days for a book. :)

I'm also reading this week's issues of US News & World Report and The Week. And the current issues of Food and Wine, Blender, and Eating Healthy.

Shadow, how do you like that book, Holy War Inc.... i bought it , started reading it, but lost interest for some reason (can't remember)... I started reading the anti-terror books... read a great one about the '92 WTC bombings and the author tried to make a link between Ramsi Yousef and Saddam Hussein, very interesting stuff...

right now i'm looking to purchase, Countdown To Crisis: The Nuclear Showdown With Iran...

saw this guy on the Fox News Channel and he supposedly interviewed 6 Iranian defectors, one of which was a high ranking Iranian Intelligence officer who says that Iranian intelligence had pictures of both the WTC towers and the Pentagaon in early 2002 and that they corroborated with the 9/11 Hijackers prior to the attacks... I believe our government has proved that 6 of the Hijackers traveled to Iran in the months preceding the attacks? He also asserts that senior Al Qaeda leadership (#1 & #2) are being harbored in Iran, and that Bin Laden's son, is being trained and groomed in Iran to become the next functional head of Al Qaeda should his father be killed or captured. The author supposedly had to travel all over the world to meet with these defectors as they are in hiding...

I can't wait to pick the book up and find out what it's all about...

It gets a little slow at points, but all in all it is a very interesting book. I used to do Intel work for the Army, so the book fit at the time I bought it. Started reading it, put it down some time ago. Just started over with reading it again.

  16. ANHEDONIC

    ANHEDONIC Will Title For Food

lol yeah i should search for mine and maybe finish it... At the time i was looking for information all about Al Qaeda and how they operate... i guess that kinda information is hard to come by... I was less interested in the political aspects of how the organizations came to be and what not....

  17. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The info isn't really that hard to come by, I have a ton of it; unfortunately most of it is restricted and not for public distribution. I get most of it through military channels. Global Security is a good open source site, the State Department has a ton of info available for public distribution.

Well then i guess it IS "hard to come by" if most of it is restricted and not distributed to the public =]

Could you link me to those sites you mentioned where I could read up more on Al Qaeda?

Manners is a relative thing. You don't see many SAS soldiers with manners. And you're using the present tense. He was dangerous, but because now he's on such a tight leash he's about as dangerous as a gerbil. Yes, his company does pen tests, but all of them legit. Besides, with all the publicity he's got do you really think he's going to be active?

Anyway, what I wanted to ask..

How was it? I've been waiting to get my hands on that book for a while, it looks informative Art of Deception was more social engineering, which of course is Mittnick's area of expertise. I'd be interested to see what you think of it so far :)

It's good having a girlfriend who works in a bookshop: reading is cheaper :D

Pretty good. I haven't read Art of Deception yet, so I don't know if it is laid-out in the same way, but this one is a series of maybe a dozen or so stories. Most of them are pretty good. There is a section at the end about Social Engineering. Actually, I learned quite a bit, not about hacking but rather making networks more secure. I think you really need to understand the mindset of an attacker to know how to defend your network. It's like being a cop or something. Who was it, Lao Zsu that said "know thy enemy"?

A good book for anyone who likes intense-thriller type stuff, but has a short attention span like I do. I like things in small doses, so books like that are perfect for me.

As for Mitnick, he's a decent guy. Never met him personally, but he's totally legit nowadays. Besides, he paid his debt to society. He got shafted pretty hard. Considering how easily a lot of sex offenders and other creeps get off so easily nowadays, you'd of thought the guy was a mass murderer. They made him out to be a lot worse than he actually was. The gov was just so afraid of him because they were so stupid and gave him more credit than he deserved. They thought he was like magic or something. He had less rights while in prison than murderers do. He was in solitary confinement and was denied any phone calls because they actually thought he could phone in a launch code that would fire off missles and start a world war! I think the feds saw too many movies!

    @Goldfish
The portrayal of Mitnicks actions may have been exaggerated(This is also responsible for his popularity). But the reason I despise him is because of a psychological factor:He hacks for Recreation. Also he hacks individuals and not technologies and architectures.I have sympathies for hackers who hacks architectures and technologies(even though it is possibly more damaging eg Mike Lynn on Cisco). From a psychological point of view Mitnick doesnt appear to be a hacker but a fool.He likes annoying people not exploring and learning the technology.Any person looking at Mitnicks life objectively will see only one thing-immaturity and no real contribution to the tech community. His self justification is far from convincing in this regard. All talk and no truth. He was convicted so many times and he still dint care to stop.He will fall into the category of dystructive hackers in my book.

The Shadow Of Saganami, by David Weber.

14th, and last, in a series. That's kept me entertained for the last 2 months. (sigh) I read too fast. I love an extended visit to a place I enjoy, but am always sad when the story is over. At least this has been a long story. hehe. Another book in the series coming out this fall, but I'll have to fill in with some others until then.
