I've been flying them, both electric and nitro, for about 6 years now and it's great. However, I wanted more of a challenge, so I took up RC Helicopters about 2 months ago. Well, I wanted a challenge....I got one!! So, does anyone else here 'fly,' either planes or helicopters? Electric or nitro?

Gloozit, I've never used that type of controller, but I can see the benefits of it. At least with that kind of control you won't have to worry about your plane heading for parts unknown if, by chance, your radio controller decides to crap-out!! I've only seen that happen once and, trust me, it's not a pretty sight!!:-D

N5638J, if you've never flown an RC helicopter, may I make a suggestion? Don't start with a nitro bird. Instead, start with something like a CX\2, or a C\X3. Both are electric birds and are coaxial in configuration, and are ALOT cheaper to repair when you crash. Not only that, the initial cost isn't near a nitro bird. A CX\2, or CX\3 will run about $200.00 and comes complete with EVERYTHING you need to start. Here's some info on those two birds, just in case you're interested http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLH2000 And this is the CX\2, which is what I'm flying http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLH1250. However, mine doesn't look quite like that anymore since I've done some modifications to it.

Not to mention the wings and the fuselage!:-D I wanted to try jets before I went to helicopters, but after talking with some of the guys who fly them at the field, I determined that I'm just not rich enough, or skilled enough to attempt them!! They look like they'd be a blast to fly, but they're just too damn fast for my reflexes!!:cry

Yeah, that sounds good until you stumble and let go of the handle. My bro did that, this very large plane headed for the nearest kit eating tree. Go figure. :cry rolleyes

Man, that guy is GOOD!!! I wish I had 0ne-third of his skill. They fly a few jets at our field too, but I've never seen one flown like that. I can only imagine the money he has tied up in that jet. Thanks Hrlow2!!

Without a doubt...that took some long hours of practice and many 'crashes to get that good;) However, when you can do this with an RC helicopter, you KNOW you're good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8t41avFuCc&feature=related That's what you call some really good 3-D flying. In case your interested...NO I CANNOT fly that well, especially with a coaxial bird. I'm more into convential flying and, with any luck, this will be my next bird http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ECSjd-h2RM&feature=related With the lights and sounds, I probably could build one of those for about $2,500 to $3,000, depending on the motor and servos I'd use. BTW, that does include the TX!!

HI N5636J!! It's been awhile! Have you ever watched "Airwolf" on TV? That is one beautiful bird. However, after the show was cancelled after 3 seasons, Airwolf was sold to a German firm where she now serves as an air ambulance, without her guns and rockets:-D Actually, there was a 4th season. USA Networks picked it up, but changed all the people and any action from Airwolf was dubbed in from the previous seasons. What a waste! Still, I managed to buy the first 3 seasons of Airwolf on DVD and even though the 4th season is available on DVD, I think I'll pass;) All together there were 55 episodes, not counting the 4th season. In case you haven't guessed, yeah, I love Airwolf too!!!

You can't tell me anything that i don't already know lol i know every Ep word for word lol "The wolf has come down from the north and your fat little town is safe no longer" And i know most people hated season 4 but i liked it sure not as good as the rest but they tried.

Well, it looks like it's time to 'hi-jack' my own thread!! N5638J, I'm hunting for an episode of Airwolf that I thought would be in the first 3 seasons, but it's not, nor is it in the 4th season. Maybe you can help, I hope! It's where Airwolf totally destroyed a casino run by the Mafia that half-killed a local cop. It was a tall, white, round building and, I think, it was one of the best action scenes 'The Lady' ever did. I've only seen that episode once, but it has stuck with me for some reason! I can't think of the name of the episode, nor where to find it. I'm beginning to think that they didn't put all the episodes on DVD:cry Can you think of the name of that episode? I'd sure like to find it, even if I have to buy another DVD to get it!

Now that is what I call too close for comfort:-D Was the pilot of that Catalina blind, or just plain stupid:confused The pilot was probably talking on a cell phone and not paying any attention to what he\she was doingroflmao Personally, if I would have been in that boat, I would have abandoned ship LONG before that thing got that close:-D

Thanks N5638J!! That was one of my all time favorite episodes. Well, that one and the one where 'The Lady' took on Airwolf II!! Oh hell, I liked 'em all:-D Hrlow2 brought up Blue Thunder, wasn't her base a French Gazelle. I think I read somewhere that it was, but I could be wrong. Oh well, I guess it really doesn't matter since Airwolf blew Blue Thunder out of the sky, and here's the proofroflmaohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r5-Ptjjb3k

WOW! thanks for the vid hrlow I thought I'd seen everything but that just blew me away:)Is amazing how he keeps track of the plane at those distances and speeds.

You must be doing alright for yourself Stubby if your into RC helicopters:-DIts not just the initial outlay, one little crash 'and everyone crashes' and its hundreds of bucks for the parts.

My brother was into them for a while RC planes that is,while he was training with the cable that links two transmitters together he ended up in a nose first vertical dive "So much for his instructor stopping him from crashing."rolleyes,he hit the grass at almost full speed, the plane completely exploded but his Irvine engine dissapeared, turns out it was one and a half feet into the ground we had to get shovel to dig it out.:-D It ran perfectly though after a little clean up.

EDIT yeah I've got an ESKY lama helicopter, not fancy just a bit of fun, they've come down in price too!

We can thank Lithium Polymer batteries for making electrical helicopters practical, just a couple of years ago they only had a flight time of a few minutes.

Yeah, I know the feeling:-D That was from the movie 'Firebirds' where the U.S. sent a fleet of Apaches to South America to destroy some big drug dealers cocaine fields. I don't know why they needed the Apaches, after all they had 'Airwolf!' I didn't realize that you fly helicopters too, that's cool! One things for sure, you do have a good little 'bird' in the Lama. One of the best and most durable coaxial helicopters there is. However, I'm about ready to leave the coaxial birds and start with the CP (collective pitch) birds. Single rotor w\tail rotor. I'm going to start with the 'Blade 400' and once I can master that, then I want to start work on my 'Airwolf' project that I mentioned above. That, however, hinges on whether or not the First National Bank of Wife approves my loan application:-D I'm going to use the Trex 600 as my base and totally rebuild it. BTW, this is a 'Blade 400' http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLH1400 The only problem with the 'Blade is that it uses plastic gears in the servos so the first thing I'll do is replace them with metal geared servos and then let the crashing begin!roflmao

You got me thinking Stubby and reignited my chopper passion,I've dug out my helicopters, both suffered fatal crashes :-D but I've managed to make one good one out of them both, charged all 4 of my LIPO's up this morning so I'm planning to have a little fly later on just waiting for my transmitter to charge.

Note I have 20 spare blades:-DThey are murder to fly indoors your constantly catching the blades when in small rooms,I put tape over the leading edge now to offer some protection.

I made the tail myself from 3 carbon fibre rods ,as you can see the old one is really brittle, its half the weight of the original tail and almost indestructible.

I want to move onto a 'real' helicopter with collective pitch and a tail rotor also but I need a few more hours on the lama yet.

I couldn't get your blade 400 link working so

    http://www.f1hobbies.com/shop.php?id=756&level=

25 amps current draw on the motor that's a fair bit of juice,11.1V 1800mAh 20CLi-Po battery my lama has a 2 cell 800mah 7.4V battery, amazing how light and small they are yet can keep the chopper in the air for 10mins+.

Smooth move with the carbon fiber tail boom Rikky;) I did the same for my CX\2 and you may just be surprised about how much more responsive she'll be, especially when flying out of doors. Not only did it cut down on the weight, but the air resistance is almost nil. When I put my new tail boom on, it did cut down on the weight, however, I then added an aluminum swash plate, and upper and lower heads, which negated what I gained by the carbon fiber. I still get about 7 minutes per battery even with the additional weight as opposed to the usual 9 or 10 minutes.

I go to the RC Universe forums and they have a dedicated forum just for the Lamas, as with the Blades, and you may want to check 'em out. It's full of a lot of good tips. Here's the address to the Lama Forums http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_481/tt.htm

BTW, I posted pics of my 'bird' on these forums somewhere, but now I can't seem to find them. I'll look again and if I can't find them, I'll just re-post them! Oh yeah, as for the 'Blade 400.' That would be a great bird if you want to move up to a CP helicopter. The only problem with them is the servos. They have plastic gears and one good crash would wipe them out. So, when I do get the 400, the first thing I plan to do is get some metal geared servos, which will probably run about $50.00. That's cheaper than having to replace them after every crash! Stock servos run about $25.00.
