I have an HP (Pavilion 7915) with a HD (Maxtor 40gig) that won't boot up. It goes to the first WinXP splash screen, then circles back to black page with options to go into "safe mode", "start windows normally", etc... None of the options will work. I've put this HD as a slave on another PC, & was wondering if I can make a Recovery CD somehow this way by accessing the HP HD? I do not have any actual CD's with this PC. Friend who owns it says it's on the HD. Any ideas on where the "Recovery" data would be located? Or any other ideas on how to get it to "boot up" so that I can run all the malware scans on it? Thanks in advance!:)

I'm a bit confused. Please confirm my understanding of your query and fill in a few details.
You say that 'none of the options work'
Are you sure you have tried the one called
last known good configuration This one is your best bet.

If this does not work you say you have access to your another pc to run the drive as a slave. Did you set the jumpers correctly? What did you see on YOUR drive?

Does your friend also have an HP pavilion - the recovery disk is generic. The working pavilion has an icon to create a recovery disk - follow it.

The hp recovery process requires a working operating system to load the recovery. This is contained on a small FAT partition, also on the hard drive and accessed by the bootdisk HP urge owners to make at the outset.

"Last known good configuration" does not work either. It just circles back around to same page. The HP HD will work as a slave & can access all files & folders on it. This HP PC is my friend's & I'm trying to repair it. Apparently he did not make the recovery bootdisk as HP recommends. Am simply wondering if I can make a recovery CD since I am able to access all the files with his HD as a slave. Just not sure where to find it. For example...I see a folder in the "Windows" folder, named "repair"...but not sure if this is the one I need. Does that make it more clear as to what I'm asking? Thank you!:)

presumably your working pc has a cd/dvd writer or you could not be contemplating making a recovery cd.

With the hp drive attached as slave the first thing to do is to make a copy of all the data so it can't be lost.

Then you have nothing to loose trying to access the hp repair folder and running the hp executable to create a recovery cd.

Alternatively, since the recovery cd is generic HP may be prepared to sell your friend one. I know that Dell do.
