Computer overheated while playing game, now won't post.

Hi guys! Any help would be appreciated! :D

Here's my PC's specs:
PSU: A-POWER AGS 400W 20+4 PIN SINGLE FAN SATA ATX PSU
Motherboard: ASRock N68C-GS FX AM3+ NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965
Ram: Corsair 4 gbs
Graphics card: Geforce GTX 550 TTi

And here's the story. I was playing a game on high settings, used coretemp to make sure it wasn't too hard mid game, and it ended up being too hot later on and the computer shut off without warning. So I opened everything up checked the temps (much too hot to touch) and thought crap. After letting it cool off for an hour, I hooked everything back up and when I pressed power, the fans don't spin but the power led lights on the front of the case. I swapped the cpu fan with an identical one that shipped with the cpu, no luck. I did my reading and it seems like it's likely a psu issue and I've been thinking about getting a new cpu. Please let me know if there's any thing I can do to troubleshoot more. Thanks in advance!

Hi welcome to the forum


The first thing to do in this situation is a cmos reset,Touch a bare metal part of the case to discharge static then with the power disconnected press the power button to drain all power from the system,remove the coin shaped battery from the motherboard for a minute,replace the cmos battery and try to boot.

Does the psu fan spin?If so I would assume working psu,if not do a psu test either with a psu tester or manually using the paper clip technique.

For testing remove all ancillary components,hard drives,cdrom,all add in cards apart from video card,use only one stick of memory and try to boot then switch to a different stick and try again.

Yea I think the PSU is fried. I tried hooking it up to the old motherboard I had (with AMD Sempron 2) and the fans didn't spin either. I've had this psu working with the GTX 550 for over a year now. Granted it probably wasn't running to its full potential with the sempron before, it's curious how it still worked well for a whole year..
I will also try the manual test for my psu involving a paper clip (once I find one that is..) but I'm more and more pessimistic about this whole thing :/
On a side note, I tried resetting the CMOS with both jumper method and battery method, but what is particularly interesting is that as soon as I plug in the psu and flip the switch, the power LED lights up without me pushing the button. I'm not too sure what ot make of this but if saves my computer who cares.
