Should I password protect a laptop?

Been doing some research on password protecting a laptop. Sounds like a good idea, but then I read some accounts of users getting locked out of their computers.

Went to Help and Support for Windows. They talked about Fast User Switching which I am not familiar with. So my questions are these:

    1. Is it a good idea to password protect a laptop?

    2. If so, is there some easy and relatively painless way to arrange things so that only the authorized user can punch in a password use his laptop? Short of carrying this thing around on my back, I am looking for some way to add a layer of protection.

The system in question is a Dell Inspiron 6000 and runs XP Pro.

    Thanks all!
