We're having network speed issues at our site.

    The setup is:

A main 'admin' office which houses all servers & the main internet connection comes in here.
Several other physical sites connected to the main admin site via fibre cable.

At the Admin office we have an HP 5304XL L3 Procurve Switch.
From here there are media converters that take fibre cables to our other sites.
At their end, there are media converters that bring the connection back into HP ProCurve 2524 Switch.
From here ethernet cables run all over to different offices.

I downloaded and ran a program called Lan Speed Test from a PC at the admin site and from a PC at the remote site.

    Results:

Within admin: Write speed for a 20M file - 248.489 Mbps
    Read speed for a 20M file - 277.7010 Mbps

At remote site: Write speed for a 20M file - .06049Mbps
    Read speed for a 20M file - 2.2384

Obviously there is an issue somewhere.

I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting here.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Amber

If your network traffic is running over the Internet (location "A" to location "B"), call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and have them run remote diagnostic tests on your modem. This should be a free service. If it doesn't pinpoint the problem the ISP help desk may be able to suggest other self-help (free) options to solve the problem.

If this doesn't solve the issue (or if point "a" to point "b" is all within a single building), it's likely you'll need to call an expert networking person to diagnose things. Based on your description of the problem, be sure the person has experience troubleshooting fiber optic systems.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Hi Amber

My questions would be the following:
Is it only one remote site that is experience slow internet response or all remote sites, if you have a shared folder or file on a server (excel or word doc)in your main admin area and you try to access it from the remote site, does the remote site experience slowness as well or is it internet only that suffers the slow response?
    - Between the HP L3 switch are you running media converters between the main admin fibre and the remote site fibre?
    - check the uplinks from the admin building to the remote sites and make sure all ports are running at 100/Full an not 10/half

    Regards
    Apache
