Hi All,
I recently purchased a used IMAC (only six months old) on eBay. It is a Core Duo (first generation Intel chip). It has arrived in great condition. The issues I am experiencing are no doubt my lack of knowledge of macs. 1) The guy I purchased in from is still listed in the finder. His "short name" appears next to the home symbol (the little house). Can I change it without losing all the Itunes songs he was kind enough to leave me? 2) The mp3 Library that I spent hours dragging over from my wife's PC to my new IMac is not in the Itunes Library anymore... at least when I open Itunes. It disapeared right after a Apple Intel update of about (147 MBS) that popped up on my IMac screen. After the update that is not the only odd thing to happen. I can find my library of songs by going to the finder however I do not know how to properly reload them. When I got the Imac it had firefox on it (which I really like using). However I could not open firefox from the flashlight thingy at the bottom of the screen (the place where your quick launch is in Windows). So I reloaded a new version of firefox for mac it appeared and worked great (I even found and transferred my bookmarks over. However, After that rather large "Apple Intel" update - it now appears that my version of firefox (with all my bookmarks) in not accessable there is a big question mark "?" in the flashlight area. His version now opens without my bookmarks - mine has the pesky little question mark. Can anyone give me some help or direction on how to fix these issues. I'm sore an experience Mac person could fix this stuff quickly enough however my experience is with PC only - til now. Thank you as always you guys have always been very good help.

Answer: You need to check to see if these songs he "left" (unintentionally most likely) are licensed to him. If they are, you should delete them because he paid for the license and they do not belong to you. If they are not licensed music from iTunes, then you can move the music to a different location, create a folder on your Macintosh HD and label it "Music". Do the same for all of your wife's music, move it to this same "Music" folder. Then, what I would do is create a new user with your own name and make your own shortname. In iTunes you can change the location of your library, and point it to the new "Music" folder you created. 2) The mp3 Library that I spent hours dragging over from my wife's PC to my new IMac is not in the Itunes Library anymore... at least when I open Itunes. Find the file on the Macintosh HD, move them, then tell iTunes where to find your music library (preferences). When I got the Imac it had firefox on it (which I really like using). However I could not open firefox from the flashlight thingy at the bottom of the screen (the place where your quick launch is in Windows). After you create your new user (make sure you make yourself an administrator), you can open up the Applications folder and drag and drop the apps you use most into the Dock (the thing at the bottom similar to a Quicklaunch). If this happens again after a future update, just delete the icon from the dock and drag and drop it again from the Applications folder. |
