I personally have performed this mod on my Powercolor X800GT 256MB Card. It's an excellent mod, and raised my scores in 3DMard 06 up about 700 points. I also get better FPS and smoother gameplay without choking
NOTE : THIS MOD ONLY WORKS FOR 256MB VERSIONS OF THE X800 SERIES!!!

Now, let's get started with the mod!

You will need the following tools:

    * ATITool - Used to check your video card settings.
    * ATIFlash - Used to flash your video card with the new BIOS.
    * A new video card BIOS, which can be found later in this article.

    Step 1 : EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!

There is only really one sure way to do this, remove your heatsink CAUTIOUSLY, and scrape the thermal paste off and if your GPU says "R480" then you HAVE a card capable of the mod. Although, some cards actually have the R480 GPU, but ATi started etching R423. Either that or the card is bieng improperly set as a R423. ATITool can tell you what chip you have by holding SHIFT and clicking "Settings". It will say "Chip Name" and then to the right the name of your chip. (Mine was R423 before flash, and now its R480 after, but I took off my HSF (Heatsink and fan) to make sure my GPU was a R480, which it was)

    Step 2: Dowload the BIOS

Now that your sure your card is an R480, its time to download the right BIOS for yourself. There are a few different bioses, and None of these will identify the card as an X800 GT. Since ATI's driver package does not support an X800 GT with an R480, which would be why the Powercolor cards don't have it set as such.

All of the bioses are modded to 16 pipelines, so that all available pipelines will be used (all that aren't locked elsewhere)." - ShadowFlare from techPowerUp!

NOTE : All the above BIOSes are created by ShadowFlare and would like to thank him for letting me link to them.

Step 3 : Preparing for flash

Once you have the BIOS you need (double check and make sure its the right one), its time to flash your video card!

Put all the files from the "FlashROM" folder onto a floppy (sorry, CD's won't work, time to un-legacy free your pc!) Name your new BIOS something simple like "Newbios.ROM" and remember what you named it so you can flash it, also put this new BIOS on the floppy.

    Step 4 : Backing Up

Boot into DOS and insert the ATIFlash floppy. Run ATIFlash.exe and type "atiflash -s 0 backup.rom"

It's recommended you name your backup, backup.rom or backup.bin, or old.rom/bin. Something easy to remember if something goes wrong.

    Step 5: Flashing

Boot up into DOS and insert the ATIFlash floppy. Here's the tricky part...

Run the ATIFlash.exe and now type this "atiflash -p 0"

It should give you some information then say "P/N Mismatched" and "Error 0FL01 : Press "1" to continue".

The reason for this is because the new bios your using has a different P/N number. Some BIOSes don't do this, they will just flash, which is fine, but if you get the error DON'T PANIC, IT''S NORMAL. The worst thing to do would be to shut off your PC.

Now, type the following "atiflash -p -f 0 xxx.ROM" put your BIOS name in for xxx, also you can save your bios as .rom or .bin either will work.

The -f command tells atiflash to FORCE the flash reguardless of the P/N mismatch. If you still get an error, then load your old bios back on by typing this:

"atiflash -p -f 0 backup.rom" or whatever you named your backup. Now restart your PC, your card cannot be flashed.

NOTE : Sometimes ATIFlash gets finicky and you will have to type "atiflash -f -p 0 xxx.ROM". So you will have to start using the -f command right after atiflash. If that still doesn't work, your card cannot be flashed.

    Step 6 : Restarting!

Now, if everything has gone correctly and the flash is good, then you can go ahead and restart your PC. If it boots up as normal then yay! Now run your benchmark of choice, or just monitor your FPS in-game, or if you spend way too much time playing games (like me) you can tell if the performance improved just by playing.

    Bad Flash?

If you flashed and restarted but now your not getting picture to your monitor, you got a bad flash. Sometimes they happen, and reflashing with the new BIOS will fix it.

To fix a bad flash, you will need a PCI video card and a free PCI slot. Insert the card, and boot into DOS again and follow these steps :

Run atiflash again and type :

"atiflash -p -f 0 backup.rom" or whatever you named your backup. Shutdown your PC and remove the PCI card, and boot off of your X800 again. The picture should be back. If not, your card fried, (extremely small chance) and an RMA can fix this, if your card is fairly new, if its older, time for a new card...

    Sucesses :

    My Personal Success

Bjorn3d Success - Lost the link, search google it should be around somewhere

    Another Success

I'm very pleased with my personal results. I've got the card running at a STABLE overclock of 535 Core/600 Mem. I've also purchased and installed an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer GPU cooler, keeping it nice and cool. With the unlock alone the increase in performance is wonderful, however the unlock also allows the cards true potential to be unleashed with OCing. Enjoy!

Great post, but I was wondering if you can clear something up. I have a Sapphire X800GTO AGP card. I read in techpowerup that: "The GTO² is a special product from Sapphire only. Neither the regular GTO, nor the GTO Ultimate use the unlockable chips. If it does not have ² in the name, it can't be unlocked." I do not see a 2 in the name of my card, but I physically checked the core (R480) and fuses are correct in ati tool. Can this card be modded too because I just got it and I understand ATI has been more lax in their restrictions (i.e. recently gto2's have been coming with 16 out of the box) so maybe this gto may not have a physical hardware lock? Or does it? What would happen if I flashed the bios on this card if it did have a hardware lock of those extra 4 pipelines? Anyway, any input on this would be greatly appreciated as this is my first time modding a video card and I will hold off until I can clear up these uncertainties.

It indeed can be done with my card as I have successfully unlocked 16 pipes. I used another method, however, which I learned on Techpowerup forums. A member made bootable disks which were very simple to use (thanks Dolf) and complicated matters even less.

If you arent 100%. but you've checked your card and it does say R480, I would go ahead and try it out (if you dont mind the risk of frying your card) because about 85% of the time you can flash back to the stock bios of your card.

I did it with a bootable disc that was very simple, but based on a similar methodology to yours. Sleepy....let me ask you a question. I have a BIOS that I flashed, but I flashed it with some higher clocks as the default. Do you know how to flash the exact same BIOS, but with custom default clocks of my choosing? Thanks.

You can overclock the crap out of it if you have the R480 beast. Not so much if you get the R420. I am not sure, but I think the pro line has the R420 core. But this is for the unlock of 4 additional pixel pipelines. I think yours has 12 out of the box, but I don't think this thread applies to your card, as yours is a different card. It may be able to be done, though, just with another BIOS. Here is a resource to start.

Here is another great thread from tech powerup forums.

    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=10955&highlight=x800gto

This is not your card, but they are similar and these guys are the authority on this core and card. You can ask them, they will know. Dolf is the man over there for this topic. Just say what card you have and ask if this can be unlocked and what BIOS to use. They will probably tell you that you have a slightly different card and they will most likely tell you how to go about doing it the proper way. If you burn a bad BIOS, goodbye card, unless you have a spare PCI vid card, then there is a chance you can recover and burn a different BIOS.

Flash it with the stock BIOS? Yes, you can do that if you made a backup of it, or with some extensive research you can prolly find it somewhere online. Theres a program out there, I belive its called "RaBiT" or something like that, that allows you to change the clock speeds of the BIOS file of your choice.

  10. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

Ahh, I have heard of RaBit. I will look for that. I don't want to flash it with stock again because that would put me back at 12 pipes and I also don't want clocks that low as stock (I actually have a 16 pipe BIOS with stock clocks). I will try to get RaBit and then ask on the other forum how to go about it. By the way, the BIOS is actually from Radeon X850 GTO (16 pipes). Thanks.

    Hello there.
I just tried to flash my bios using the two "powercolor x800gt" bios'es, but got an error about "can't load that" sometin', "Loaded this much of this amount". Does this mean I can't flash on my card? And can i try out the other bios'es (not meant for the "powercolor x800gt")? I have got the R480, took heatsink of and checked. Put some artic 5 on while I was there ;)

I'm runnin my powercolor x800gt at: 556,88 MHz Core and 543,38 (1086,74 DDR) Ram.
    Very stable.

    MSI K8N Neo4 FI
    AMD 939 3000+ Venice at 2170 MHz
    PC3200 at 196,8 MHz 2,5 3 3 6 1T
    HT Link 962 MHz
    HTT/FSB 241 MHz
    CPU x9 - Vcore 1,61
    HT x4 - Chip 2,55
    Ram 166 - 2,65

Somewhere over 1500 in 3D Mark 06 (havent tested new setup yet)

Look at your fuses first to make sure you can unlock the pipes. You must be really careful what BIOS you burn. Also, Powercolor has proven to not be as liberal as Sapphire when it comes to unlocking 16 pipes. More times than not Powercolor laser cuts the pipes so unlocking them causes your card to try to use missing pipes and will cause problems. There is only one way to know for sure and that is to see your fuses. Download ATI Tool from MG. When you get it, Hold down the shift key and click on "settings." Then scroll to the bottom of the list, you should see four new values listed. Those are fuses and will let you know if you can unlock the pipes. They should look like this.

    CONFIG_DIE_FUSES: 0xFFFFFFFF
    CONFIG_SUBSTRATE_FUSES: 0xFFFFFF9F

I unlocked my card already. Be very careful what BIOS you use. I can refer you to someone who can really help you and make things very simple by referring you to what BIOS to use and a download of an ISO file that is bootable to flash BIOS in the simplest way I have ever seen. Post your fuses and I can let you know if you can unlock.

  13. 5chr4pn3ll

    5chr4pn3ll Private E-2

    ok fuses are:

    Config_die_fuses 0xFFFF3FFF
    config_substrate_fuses 0xFFFFFF9D

  14. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

I'm afraid you can't unlock, as I suspected. There is a hardware lock on yours. The "3" should be a "F" and the "D" should be an "F." Physically the pipes have been severed. The only 2 options you really have are trying to RMA it for a Sapphire (which are almost all unlockable) or overclock it. The R480 overclocks really well, but you will need to replace the HSF as it is terribly inefficient. It is barely good enough for factory settings.

It's truly a shame because after unlocking, you can gain about 1000 points in 3DMark 05 before OCing. With good cooling and a solid OC, this card is still damn good at 12 pipes.

    5chr4pn3ll Private E-2

Ok too bad, but was goin to upgrade the system anyway.
    Thx for the help :)
And I belive that I've only got 8 pipelines on it :cry

  16. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

You're kidding- only 8. Are you certain? If you check ATI Tool or Everest it can tell you how many pipes you have. With that said, if it is indeed 8 (you need to double check this- very important that you do) you may be able to unlock to 12. See your fuses are in line with a typical 12 pipeline card with 4 additional pipes severed. What that may mean is that they hard locked you from going to 16, but may have only BIOS locked you from going to 12. Meaning that if you get a 12 pipe BIOS you may be able to go to 12. This right now is all speculation on my part, but if you have 8, that is what it seems.

What I would like for you to do, if you could, is to let me know how many pipes you have for sure. If you have 8 for sure, then please go to this page.
    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=10955&highlight=x800gto

Sign up real quick and ask a guy named DOLF if you can unlock to 12. He has helped, I would say, over 500 people do this mod. He knows more about this card than anyone. If you can, not only will he tell you, but he will help you find the correct BIOS and refer you to a download of a BIOS he made which is an ISO image for you to burn to boot with and do the mod very easily. If it is not possible, he will let you know that too.

Anyway, it would depend on the accurate number of pipes you have and what BIOS you have. Be very weary of what BIOS you try to use. If you can, let Dolf tell you. Good luck. Please come back and let me know how it goes, if you decide to try my advice.

By the way...the link is for techpowerup forums of which Dolf is an esteemed member.

Think I've run into some side effects here...

After I tried out the unlocking trick, I havent' been able to get up to my "pre try" OC.
When flashing with the new "unlock" bios failed, I reflashed with a bios I dumped from ATITool just before the try...

As I said I had my card at: 556,88 MHz Core and 543,38 (1086,74 DDR) Ram. And now it wont go past 540 on the core without freeze'in up...

Any ideas as to what could be causing this...??? confused

Make certain you have flashed back to stock BIOS. Double check that. That sounds like what may happen if you flashed to a 16 pipe BIOS with only 12 physical pipes available. It may be trying to use missing pipes. Also, how were/are your temps? Watch that carefully. It seems more likely to me that you are getting high temps. Use Trixx if you can to OC, not ATI Tool. I had a conflict with ATI Tool that was stopping my fan. Try it again, but keep a close eye on temps.

  20. 5chr4pn3ll

    5chr4pn3ll Private E-2

I dont think I got a temp meter.
I know that the fan uses one but I haven't found a visual yet...
    Any ideas about that?
I've heard that there's supposed to be one but...
Or do I have to go buy one external/physical?

I'll force flash the bios backup I created in bios before I tried to unlock and se if that helps...

  21. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

Just be very, very, careful with the BIOS flashes. Do you have the Trixx OCing utility? Mine came on the Radeon disc with the drivers and stuff. Careful using ATI Tool man. That thing stopped my fan twice and I almost overheated. Now that you tell me that you have no temp monitor, I definitely think it is a temp issue. That will certainly cause what you described.

See if you have Trixx on the driver disk. If not, there are some OCing utilities out there or you can use ATI Tool, but update drivers for that thing if you have to use it. For temp monitoring try Everest (if you can't use Trixx- Trixx monitors temps and finds max clocks). You can download Everest on MG. Then when you try to find your max clocks, keep a watchful eye on the temps. You should definitely get better cooling because the stock HSF is TERRIBLY inefficient, trust me on that.

Ok, thx for the heads up on ati tool.
But I had it stable at much higher clocks before...

Trixx only seems to work on sapphire cards...
I loaded up Everest but can't seem to find the temp for gpu :/
    Using Rivatuner for clocking now

On Everest.....Run Everest then click on "Computer" in the left panel. Then in the middle panel, click on "sensor." It will be displayed with all your other system temps in the middle panel as GPU temp also will give ambient temp.

Yes I tried, but no GPU... :/

Been looking around and I think that it's been cut for budget reasons by powercolor :(

Got any tips for other temp monitoring? (I know, we're of the subject here but..)

    My findings.

I spoke with DOLF and he said that by looking at my fuses
he could determine that I'm stuck on 8 pipelines :cry

Thats a NO GO on extra pipelines on:
Powercolor x800gt, 256MB, dual DVI, R480 (shows as R423) red heatsink (but not xtrem edition)
    Config_die_fuses 0xFFFF3FFF
    config_substrate_fuses 0xFFFFFF9D

Will continue to try and get a performance boost by
    flashing bios.

Consulting people, will let you know result...

Glad to see you asked Dolf. That was a smart move. I hate to say this, but I believe you have already consulted with the best guy out there. He is the best I have seen and has taught me a lot about card mods. I can say with confidence now that you can't flash to a BIOS with more pipes (not even to 12) because what will happen is your card will try to utilize pipes that have been cut! Others on that forum have done it and your card won't work properly. It is a super long-shot and not recommended, but your ONLY chance would be to bridge the pipes with a soldering gun and then give BIOS a shot. Not really an option if you ask me.

I was already aware that your fuses would not allow you to go to 16 pipes, but I thought 12 was a possibility. Dolf confirmed otherwise, but I hope something works for out you. If it is any consolation, you have R480 core which has awesome OC potential.

Hi all I want to flash my bios I have read a few different ways of doing it but unsoldering part can be touchy and just flashing a bios sounds more safe.

I have read over the first post many times and printed it out but I'm getting confused on many things I need a hand with.

First off I pulled out my Powercolor x800 pro Heat sink and had a look at the GPU under the heat sink to see what it had written on the GPU, there was:

    ATI Radeon x800
    215RAACG11F
    GCO5541
    0429AA
    TAIWAN

On a sticker on the graphics card was R42-PD3B

When I run the ATI tool and go into settings then look at overclocking, the spec's are this:

    Device ID.............................4A49
    Chip Name............................R420
    Host Interface.......................AGP
    Catalyst Version....................7.4
    Memory Size.........................256 MB
    Memory Type........................DDR3
    Memory Bus With...................256 Bit
    Active Pipelines.....................12
    Default Gpu Clock..................492.75 Mhz
    Default Mem Clock.................452.25 Mhz
    CONFIG_DIE_FUSES................0xFFF38FFF
    CONFIG_SUBSTRATE_FUSES.....0xFFFFFF1E
    CONFIG_ROM_FUSES...............0x20
    GB_PIPE_SELECT....................0x12B84

So my first question is, Is my GPU chip a R420 and if it is can I change it to a R480 ATI Bios and will this ATI Bios flash unlock work for me?

If I can flash this ATI GPU BIOS what bios do I use for my chip set?

    *Powercolor.X800GT_R480_16P.256.Samsung20_050726.zip
This is the second revision of the Powercolor X800 GT bios, but modified to be identified as a Powercolor X800 GTO with an R480.

    *Powercolor.X800GT_R480_16P.256.Samsung20_050715.zip
This is the first revision Powercolor X800 GT bios, modded to R480

Second and Another problem I am running into is I can not work out how to back up the bios on the card I keep getting confused on step 3 and step 4 like

You say Once you have the BIOS you need (double check and make sure its the right one:
How do I know if it is, am I missing something in the steps?

When you say "FlashROM" did you mean the atiflash315 folder the 3 files inside had to be copied onto the floppy?

Also after I have the 3 files inside folder atiflash315 copied onto the floppy Then copy the new ATI Bios file say out of this file as a e.g
Powercolor.X800GT_R480_16P.256.Samsung20_050726.zip called Powercolor.X800GT_R480_16P.256.Samsung20_050726.bin and then change that name to something like Newbios.ROM is this right?

Then in step 4 I get lost again you say

When you say boot into Dos do you mean shut down your computer and boot into dos or do you mean run the atiflash.exe from the desktop. As I am having problem backing up my current ati bios.

Sorry I'm a bit thick sometimes but I wish to know this as I would rather be safe and do it right the first time.

    Thanks Skippy258

Is this right for your set up of Ati Bios flash as well?

Allso because my graphics card is not vivo can i still try and unlock the pipes at all?... or will this kill my card.

    Thanks again Skippy258

P.S Also should I keep posting in here or should I make a new post and copy the info I have posted into there?

Hello. I tried this mod, and I'm having a pretty big problem. The new bios didn't flash, and it gave me the 0FL01 "rom not erased" error. I've tried to flash the original bios, but I get the same thing. I used "-f", "-newbios"...but no dice. I hope I haven't ruined my card.

Somone's retracted comment reminded me to update my situation.

I found out about a hard-mod to clear the rom so that it would accept a new - proper bios. It was adventurous, and it turned out I was able to flash the new soft-mod bios after getting it operational again. :dancer
