What's all this about??.......Have just got a new PC yesterday......everytime I start it up, a web page comes up (or something from t'internet I think) saying The page cannot be displayed......currently unavailable blah blah blah...tells me to refresh and check that my settings match those provided for by my lan administrator or my ISP....

What have I done wrong THIS time?

There is nothing in my Start Up folder and I'm using Mozilla Firefox......

No web site.......It's just a page with "Toolbar EULA" on the blue bar thingie at the top....then all the blurb.....like you get when a web site can't be found....

What have I done?? I hate being THICK!

Heh, Matt's looking for the address! It WILL be there, in the address bar. As I type this, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=891255 is what appears in my address bar, for example.

I know what an address bar is, but this is a plain page and it pops up even before the internet connection kicks in.......

I think I must have a conflict somewhere...the only way to get rid of the page is to Ctr Alt Delete and get rid of it that way..through the Task Manager ..there are no buttons on the top RH side either to minimise etc......

Ahem......I would, if I knew how to do it.....

Do I press the "print screen" button, copy it to a word document then insert image?

  9. matt.chugg

don't copy it to word, copy it to paint! then save it as a JPG and attach it using the paperclip button on your next post.

    ok lol no address bar,

However thats not an internet explorer window, the icon in the tray isn't right.

It could be malware or it could be a legitimate toolbar, Have you installed anything recently?

Please read this and post a HJT log.

I only got the computer on Monday.........I have set it up with Photoshop and Acoustica CD Label maker.....I have connected the thing to a wireless internet connection (That's another problem....but I'm old and won't live long enough to describe why the martian thingie that I bought for the wireless set up is in the cellar and the actual computer is 3 floors away and has an intermittent connection....) I have fought with the 3com officeconnect utility thing and window zero configuration.......

Oh yes.....and have swapped to Mozilla Firefox......

I have lost the will to live after you telling me to read that other stuff....

    Oh...........bubbles....

Can I just restore to an earlier date?.....Like Monday, two minutes after I unpacked it?

It looks decidedly like the Google Toolbar icon the little eyes, check your Add/Remove for any mention of Google Toolbar and remove/uninstall it.

I'm not brave enough to use the HijackThis programme you show me.....

It says it's for advanced users only.....I'm advanced in years only.....

    Anyone got any more ideas?

I've tried everything...I've installed everything and re-installed it all back.....and wasted days.....I've not had the courage to revert the PC back to an earlier date....cos it says I'll do something to some drivers......

Help this poor daft bat please!

I know there's nothing for AOL but I use Google a lot.....and it started to format or organise my computer files for some reason...I didn't like that so I removed it....I wonder if I should have left it to finish before I dumped it!

start->Control panel-> internet options (my be hidden under "network and internet connections")->advanced tab->"enable 3rd party browser extensions". Does it still happen?

I would also recommend going through your entire list of add-remove programs and uninstall anything that contains the word "toolbar" (when in doubt, post asking if something is safe to remove).

By the way, did this problem start before or after you removed the google toolbar?

Don't know if you are talking about Google Toolbar or Google Desktop. Which ever one it was, maybe if you reinstall it, let it do it's thing and see if that solves the problem.

I think Halo is right, it must be Google related.

    1. I have unchecked this.....the screen is still haunting me! (Shall I recheck the box again?)

    2. Nothing that has toolbar in it....have gone through them all!

    3. Can't remember if it started before or after the Google incident....helpful aren't I?

I have 3Com wireless thingie....why do I need a Broadcom Management Programmes programme supplied by Dell....Can I remove this?

What is Search Assistant....Can I dump this?

AND What is Roxio DLA?...If it's a free suite of stuff with the compliments of Dell, can I get shut of these?

I'm going to put my curlers in now and have my cocoa.....

    Kind regards

Please follow the instructions and post a HijackThis log. The log will tell me what toolbars etc you have installed.

Its simple to do, all you need to do is download HJT from the location in the earlier link and run it. Then click on do system scan and save log file.

A notepad window will open with a list in it just save the file somewhere you will remember and upload it here.

would it help if Onnha posted a screen shot of the screen just before she hits the enter key that produces the error screen???

I don't hit the enter key! I switch on the computer, go to my user name, select my user name, I see the desktop screen for 2 seconds.....then the nasty page comes up EVERY TIME! I have to Ctr Ent Delete and get shut of it that way.....Alt F4 won't get shut of it either......

I'm going to have a go at that Hijack thing.....see what else I can wreck.....

    Hi

Thats fine, but you still have Google Desktop Search installed? goto C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\ and look for an uninstall file, maybe called Uninstall, Unwise, Uninsxxx ( where xxx is a number ) and click that to uninstall Google Desktop.

    If that doesnt work we can remove the popup at boot by running Hijackthis again this time just run a System Scan and check/tick this line;

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup

Exit your all browser windows < important, then click Fix Checked

Reboot and see if it still pops up?

I've now uninstalled Google Desktop for the second time (Matacumbie suggested I put it back as I may not have installed it properly, so I did, and it's gone again) Still the same screen!

I have done the next thing you suggest.......There is no mention whatsoever about a 04-HKLM line with the word Google in it...so I can't check it.....

    Oh dear......

    onnha, Please forgive me for buttng in, the gentlemen who have been trying to assist you are much more knowledgeable than I am;

But I had a problem recently involving the instilation of the google tool bar, which I did not want and did not request.
Not the same problem as yours but similar. In addition to google, my problem also involved a Firefox update (according to what was displayed on the screen). The only way I could stop whatever was running was ctl-alt-delete to get task manager running, then cancel the application that was running, then uninstall firefox, then shut down, then restart, and reinstall firefox -- problem went away.

Thank you for your help!!!!!! Sounds just like this problem! So I uninstalled Firefox, shut down the computer totally, switched on again, reinstalled Firefox.....and..........it's STILL THERE!!!!!

The computer is only two weeks old....So it's no big deal to take everything off it and start again....or would that not work? Don't you get some sort of restore disk or am I talking my usual rubbish?

    Kind regards

    start--> run-->enter msconfig-->click ok
    click startup tab
if anything looks fishey on that list, clear the checkmark at the begining of the line and reboot.

you could do that with the services tab also, But I would makesure I had screen prints of tabs I changed so I knew how to put things back if I had to

Ha! Ha! I have found "Dell EULA Launcher" under the Start Up Tab! I unchecked the box! It now states that it's not normal start up mode but selective start up and I now get the message below (If I've attached it correctly) Can I just tick the box and keep the computer on Selective Start Up?

    Is this sorted now??????????

    ?!

Why gecks, by preventing parts of Google Desktop from running you will just prevent indexing of file in realtime and prevent it from working properly. If you don't want google Desktop uninstall it. The same applies to everything else, if you don'[t want it get rid of it!

  48. oh_no_not_her_again

You could keep the computer on selective startup; but seeing that it's a new computer, I'd want to know what is missing. Is it a new pc or new-to-you. If it s new and its a Dell, call Dell support, or go back to the vendor and see if they can tell you what is missing and how to fix it.

If that doesn't work, see if you can identify what in the "add and remove programs" list is responsible for the error and uninstall it. However I wouldn't do that unless I know for sure it wasn't something needed.

maybe one of the other, more knowledgeable gentlemen would check back in here and provide advice on the proper way to fix the problem
