Smile Linksys Wireless router - 192.168.1.1 not found

I am trying to set up my new Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and cannot get the web pagehttp://192.168.1.1 to open in Internet explorer (necessary to get into the router's management page to set passwords etc).

I have looked it up on Google, and this seems to be a common problem. However, I have tried most of the solutions I found - emptied the temporary file cache on IE, made sure my PC's ethernet adaptor is set to obtain an IP address automatically, turned the router off for 1 minute, and ran ipconfig to see what the settings are - they look ok to me but here they are:

3Com etherlink xl 10/100 pci for complete pc managemnt nic (3c905c-tx)

IP address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS server 192.168.0.1

I also tried http://192.168.0.1 in case that was the problem but that didn't work either.

I also have the following returned by ipconfig which may belong to my wireless modem:

PPP adapter 3Com Etherlink XL 10/100 pci for complete pc managemnt nic (3c905c-tx)Description WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
IP address 83.216.69.187
Subnet mask 255.255.255.255
Default gateway 83.216.69.187
dns servers 81.91.192.254
81.91.192.254
primary WINS server 81.91.192.254
secondary WINS server 81.91.192.254

Please advise - if I need to reset my ip config could the instructions be detailed, please, as I am not confident of what to do (out of depth!)

Thanks

Default Re: Linksys Wireless router - 192.168.1.1 not found

It is not a common problem.

It is a problem when your computer is Not configured correctly.

A computer with PCI network card that is configured to 192.168.0.1 cannot connect to a network device that is configured 192.168.1.1

The first three groups of number on the Networked computers must be the same (AKA same subnet).

I.e. in your case every thing need to be 192.168.1.xx

Disable the Wireless card (or if it the same oci card disconnect it from the modem) since it seems to be directly connected to the Internet and does not have a local IP address.

Configure the PCI card to obtain IP and DSN Auto (or give it a static IP of 198.168.1.10).

Question Re: Linksys Wireless router - 192.168.1.1 not found

Thanks for your reply, but I am not sure how or what to reconfigure - I have just tried putting in 192.168.1.4 to the default gateway of the ethernet connection but that simply stopped me getting on to the internet at all, so I had to return to 'obtain IP address automatically' .

Baffled I am afraid.

Help?
