Computer Has Crashed/Trojan Virus/HijackThis

Hello-I had a trojan virus (I am using mom's computer today) detected via Avast. Norton was installed, but did not find it. I posted a hijackthis log, and deleted the entries found to be nasty. Now, I have no configuration, nothing. My computer now has a password it did not have before, and I don't know what it is. Nothing like this has ever happened to me! Dell gave me windows reinstall, my system is an old 98SE edition, but no product key. I used my mom's, and now have the unwanted password. How can I correct/restore this? I want it back to the way it was. Do I have to reinstall all the drivers, printers, etc? Please let me know. I have no idea, I am not a technophobe. I need easy to understand information that I can use. Help!
