    I have two PC's:

One with Windows XP & one with Windows 98.

Now all I want to do is transfer 8gb worth of files from the PC which has Windows 98 installed on it to the PC which has Windows XP installed on it. Seems easy right? WRONG, I'm extremely frustrated now as I've been trying for 2 months to find a way to get the files from 1 PC to another. Here's what I've tried so far:

    - I installed a wireless network card on to the Windows 98 PC so that it could connect with my Windows XP PC but whenever it attempts to connect to the other PC it just crashed completely and the mouse won't move etc so I have to restart the PC.

    - I tried putting a CD into the Windows 98 CD Drive so that I could transfer the files using loads of CD's but the CD Drive is unable to burn CD's.

    - I have a USB key which I am trying to put into the USB port on the Windows 98 PC but whenever I do, the PC doesn't recognise it. What I mean is the virtual drive doesn't appear in My Computer at all. I know that it's not a problem with the USB ports themselves as other USB hardware such as the wireless network card works in it.

I've really no idea what to do next as it seems as though I've tried everything. The only thing that I can think of is that the USB Key may need drivers installed for the PC to recognise it but I don't have the CD with the drivers on it. A few months back when I was using the PC with Windows 98 installed on it, the USB key worked fine though so I've no idea what's going on.

Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated!

8Gb huh. presumeably both have floppy drives?

I'll just buy some shares in floppy manufacturers.

Seriously you want Windows Direct Cable Connection.

You must have file and printr sharing enabled on both computers for this to work.
This will transfer data over either the serial or parallel ports on the computers.

You will need to purchase appropriate cables for this, the software is already part of windows.
For parallel port connection get a cable with male db25 plugs at BOTH ends ( a printer cable will not do)specially designed for this purpose. Belkin make one.
For serial you need a null modem cable with DB9 male connections at each end.

If you choose parallel port connection check bios to ensure fastest speed, use EPP betterthan ECP betterthan Standard.

    In the W98 computer
    start>programs>accessories>communications>direct cable connection

If this is not installed goto the windows setup page of add remove programs and install it from your windows disk

Set up the 98 computer as HOST to listen on serial or parrallel as appropriate

    In the XP computer

    start>programs>accessories>communications>networkconnections
    Click create new connections
    click next
    click setup an advanced connection
select connect directly to another computer click next
    select guest click next
    Enter any name click next
select parallel or serial click next
    select create shortcut if required
    click finish

use icon click connect and away you go

You can also buy a proprietary usb link cable (£25) and run the software that comes with it onboth pcs, once again connect the XP as the guest and the 98 as the host.

Have you made sure the drivers for the USB pen drive are properly installed in 98?

The other option might be to pull the machines to pieces and place the 98 HDD into the XP machine as a slave drive on the IDE. Not sure if that works or not, tho I can't see any reason why it shouldn't! I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I will be able to advise!

Yeah, that would work fine. If what Studio T says doesn't work out, you can remove the Windows '98 HDD and put it on the same IDE controller as a slave drive in the Windows XP machine. Make sure to jumper it accordingly and you should see it as drive E, for example.
