Well my roomates computer is giving the blue screen of death with the message process1_initialization_failed. We've asked a few people and they dont know what the problem is, all they do is laugh and say windows sucks get a mac. thats all fine and well but if anyone out there has any idea how this can be fixed it would be appreciated. there havent been any problems until it started doing this yesterday. the computer is only a year old dell xps. the second the computer starts it goes right to that screen, anyway any help is appreciated and thank you.

Per MS this is most likely caused by installing software that is incompatible with Windows XP. What changes were made to the pc?

The last thing to be installed was World of Warcraft, but that was almost 2 months ago and it hasnt had any problems. no hardware was added and no other software.

    Hi

Do you have as mentioned in the MS KB article Roxio GoBack installed?

Can you boot into safe mode withour getting a STOP error, and what is the full error message, some of these are vague without all the code, which may lead to a fix.

No goback was never put on the computer so thats not the problem. i dont know if this is exactly what you need but the entire message goes. 0x0000006b (0xc0000034, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) now i have no idea what this means, but i could get into safe mode earlier but now its not allowing it, the windows load screen comes up and then it takes me right to the blue screen.

Everything I can find for XP has something to do with GoBack, NT or a network connection.

Do you have Norton/Symantec Suite installed?

Is the pc connected to a school/work network?

Have you updated your Service Pack for XP or uninstalled/reinstalled XP or XP components?

Be patient, someone will figure it out.

I think you're dealing with a hardware problem here; primarily the RAM. If there's 2 RAM staicks in the PC, pull one out, then swap 'em around: try one, then the other, try them in opposite slots. Download and run a bootable memory diagnostic from the Memory section here at Major Geeks. Here's some links:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html This is an .iso file to burn to CD. It's bootable.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html This is an .exe that allows you to create a bootable floppy disc or you can create an image to burn to CD to boot to.
I've used 'em both in the past. With the 2nd one, choose the extended tests and run at least 3 passes. It'll take some time, so be patient.

I tried swapping the ram and i got the same results, tried putting the ram from this computer into the other and still the same, called a friend and he told me to hit f12 and do the hard drive diagnostics and this was the result.
Drive 0: maxtor -fail return code 7
cant get anyone on the phone so i cant ask them, and i may not know alot about computers but i'm assuming that this says the hard drive is messed up somehow. am i right in this? and if so should my roomate send the computer back to dell to have it fixed or attempt to do it at home?

    Hello again,

Per Dell forum and another Dell site, you need a new harddrive.

"Return code 7 is one of the error messages from the bios-built-in harddrive test. You'll want to call Dell support and they should be able to set up service to replace the drive" Hope it's still under warranty.
