I'm thinking of starting to play the MGS series, I've never really liked Splinter Cell so I avoided it at first. I'm just wondering which versions and on which systems I should play each title to get the most out of the experience as a beginner to the series?

I'd suggest playing on the native consoles (PS? can't remember) because the PC controls are pretty screwy. By versions do you mean order? If so, start from the beginning.

metal gear solid was originally on playstation but later got ported to gamecube with updated gfx and some extra features. the second one, sons of liberty, was on PS2, also with a few ports to xbox, GC and i think PC. the 3rd was on PS2 as well with an updated version, MGS3: subsistence which came with lots of extra goodies for only $20 (or $30 cant remember) the biggest of which was an online multiplayer mode as well as a controllable, free-moving camera unlike the rest of the MGS series. id start with the PS one, then get the second for ps2, then get subsistence. they are by far my favorite series on ps2 and is up there with the half-life series as my favorite games of all time

Yeah, it was brought to the PC called Substance with more game modes (like VR missions), hidden characters, and storylines like the Snake Tales (I'm reading this from the box :D).
I have both 1 and 2 for PC, haven't actually played 2 yet though. The controls for the first didn't take long to get used to, but either the ones in 2 are really screwy or I just need to get back into it. Maybe that's why I didn't play...you can tell it's a port because it tells to press square/triangle/etc. I don't have those on my keyboard! Well, maybe square, but there's a lot of them!
