I just purchased a new computer running Vista Home Premium. I am looking for advice about freeware that you recommend that will run under Vista. Your advice is MOST welcome. Would also appreciate any comments about what to avoid. Many thanks!

    Hi and Welcome

You have a wide subject area their! Most freeware will work with Vista as will most retail software, soem may suffer at present from having to be installed with Admin rights or have a UAC popup when run but many will work fine.

If you narrow your software genre down a bit we may be able to suggest a few? what is it your after, Antivirus, Antispyware, Graphics, Cleanup utilities, Process Monitoring, CD/DVD burning etc etc?

Nice list of compatible apps for Vista some free some retail

I am particularly interested in security programs. I use Mozilla and Firefox. And I also love utilities, so anything someone has found useful I would love to know about. The link you sent is MOST helpful. Thanks!

    Well for security

AVG and AVAST work well for Antivirus ( remember the only install one AV guidance rule tho )

SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, A Squared and Spybot work well for curbing spyware.

Firewalls are a bit touchy at present as some of the better frewares are not available for Vista yet in ZoneAlarm and Comodo ( yes ZoneAlarm has a beta which works but its still a tad buggy )

Good one is http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Firewall_Control_32-bit_d5578.html which works well.

    Other tools I have are

XNView ( good graphics viewer and editor )
CCleaner ( good for all around file and registry cleaning )
AM DeadLink ( great for going through your bookmarks for dead links )
AusLogics ( great free defragger )
doDPF ( good free PDF creator )
Process Explorer ( good for troublehooting processes which are causing issues with CPU usage )

all available here http://www.majorgeeks.com/ and we are slowly building a database of compatible apps with various OSes http://www.majorgeeks.com/compatibility.html

FileMenu Tools is good for adjusting the right click context menu
    http://www.lopesoft.com/en/fmtools/info.html ( works with Vista fine )

Just a few that work in Vista that I have installed and use.
