DVD/Rom - plays cd's not movies

Ok- I'm new here. I was troubleshooting this problem in the hardware since I @ first thought it was my DVD. My Dvd/Rom will burn & play cd's. I found a couple of Dvd games I have and I was able to load them. It seems to play them just fine. So I know it recognizes the drive. I have bought & downloaded Power Dvd, but have had no luck getting their software to recognize the drive. I keep getting a error that says no disc in drive. I was wondering if I am missing something like a driver or what. My dvd/rom is a toshiba sd-r2312 and I have been to their website and downloaded all of the firmware. Oh, yeah this is a e-machine laptop that I am trying to get up and running. Thanks !

 

Something to check, look at the properties in the device manager for the DVD ROM and see if DMA is on. You didn't mention the OS you are using, and the procedure is slightly different depending on what OS you are using, but it should be enabled in any OS.

 

I had the same problem on my old pc. My cd-rw/dvd-rom didn't recognize any dvd. I was told that it could read just dvd-r, but in reality it couldn't read any dvd at all

 

If you read the original post they state they can read data off in DVD format, just not play DVD's. This is a classic symptom of DMA not being set properly.

It also proves the DVD drive is basically working, and important consideration.
