Default what is serial.sys for

G'day, ok just wondering what c:\windows\system32\drivers\serial.sys is for?
On my sons comp xp-home sp2 under non- plug and play devices he has an exclamation mark in yellow circle.

the message in the properties is "this device is not present. is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed (code 24).

The only problem he is having comp wise is with his netgear wifi usb adaptor. Takes about 30 min and several restarts to get a signal. Once he finally has a signal works perfectly. This has been a problem for about 3 weeks, worked perfectly since we had it (7 months).

Just curious about serial.sys before i do anything. Have been googling but cant find a straight up answer.

any ideas?

thanks hopper, had a look at thos links, dunno if i understood them (ha) but had a look. Anyway my son uninstalled that serial sys. I would have preferred to find out what it was first but... anyway nothing seems affected by not having it there.
thanks;-)

Yeah- things should be OK as long as you're not using the serial port for anything; VERY few PC's have anything hooked up to the serial port anymore. In years gone by, they were like early USB ports: you could hook up a mouse, or a camera, some small handheld scanners used serial ports, etc...
