I took my old hard drive out of a computer that died and put it in a different one. I set it up as a slave on the jumper pin setting and booted up. The computer reads it as E Drive and under RAW format. It wants me to format it but I dont want to loose data. Please help...

Hello, Viper welcome to Major Geeks

A little more detail would go a long way.
    What are the operating systems
    on you new computer ?
    The old hard drive?

If you know also say what they are currently formatted as.

What kind of computer OS? XP?

Whilst I'm asking, what was the OS it came out of?

It should work, just got through doing something similar to back up a hard drive that died (turned out it was corrupted, not dead).

Run Check Disk on the old hard drive.

Post again if you need help with this.

The other possibility is that you dead pc drive has a manufacturers recovery partition on it. These are not normally readable by XP, but quite small, maybee less than 10% of the drive. If this is first XP will not have seen the main NTFS partition on the drive.

How big is the E partition?

Look here for some drive tools,
CPM and disk investigator are free

It says one part is 4.66 and another part it 33.50GB
I have no idea how to use Disk investigator, or Check Disk.
Also I ran CPM and made a boot cd but that doesnt work....

    Ok so go to
    start>run >typein
    diskmgmt.msc press enter

Can you see the old hard drive?
    Can you see both partitions?
What does it say about them?

CPU burned out... Got hot when I turned it on(Very hot) and then shut down after a couple of seconds
I also tried to put it as a master drive and when the computer booted up it said that there was no operating system

Can't see that event trashing the hard drive.

This is a situation for partition recovery software.
Partition Find and Mount is free there are others also in the drive utilities link already mentioned.

Perfect!!!!! Thanks a lot.....It worked great. One more problem......Is there any way to access my documents that are still protected on my drive?

No I kept my files non accesible from other users and now I cant access them on the different computer.

You should be able to access non encrypted files from another pc. Which files are these, where are they located? Can you see them in explorer? If so what attributes do they have; include 'Advanced' in properties?

you can only read encrypted files with the original user, this is a strength/drawback of NTFS encryption depending upon your point of view.

Under windows settings I checked off that I wanted to keep my files privite to other users. It also says there are no files in the folder...
