I need some major help. I'm far from being an advanced computer user and I think I may need professional help. My desktop has a black screen with red writing on it stating "Warning! A Spyware Threat Has Been Detected. A User has ganed access via your IP address, blah, blah." I don't recall the actual wording and I'm on another computer because I can't use the one with the black screen.

I turned everything off properly and took my computer tower to work with me. My co-worker is an IT expert and he said he could look at it. However, when he tried to plug in the tower, it has no juice whatsoever. We tried several different outlets and it won't turn on.

Am I completely screwed here? Do I need to go to the Geek Squad?

    Please let me know.

The computer will not boot up? Do you hear any fans running or sounds from the hard drive spinning? Any lights?
Plug it into a known good outlet ....try it again...and if nothing happens, try pressing and holding the power button for 10 - 20 seconds. Then try to turn it on again.

Please let us know the make and model of the computer ...it is always possible that when you disconnected and took it to work, something got jarred loose ....you will have to open the case (with it unplugged!!) and check that all connections are good ...plugs and ram and video card, etc.

Let us know what you find.

When I plug in the tower, there is no noise and no response at all. It is an HP Pavillion. I think the power problem may be due to a "brown out" in my home yesterday that seems to have shorted out a few appliances.

My biggest concern is the desktop message and how to get it fixed.

If you had a power surge...it is very likely that it also took out some of your hardware ...the power supply could be damaged, as well as your video card could be dead ...unless you are willing to go thru some component removal and replacements, you may be better off taking it to someone locally to diagnose.:(

Ok, now here's something weird. When we plug it in, there is a green light blinking on the back of the tower but nothing on the front. Sound familiar?

Sounds like your ethernet card is getting juice ....but the power supply may be damaged enough not to power up the whole system....My suggestion, if you want to try doing this yourself, would be to start a thread in the hardware section ....the malware did not do this to your system. (Once up and running we can resume this for the malware cleaning.)

We do not have the time to handle hardware issues in this forum ....but I will keep an eye on your thread in hardware. (Also you will get more responses there as this forum is restricted to Malware fighters only):)
