Spybot S&D Installing & Running

If you have not already downloaded Spybot, download it here: SpyBot - Search & Destroy

Make sure you use the above version from our link to make sure you are using the current version of Spybot.



The double click on the downloaded file to run the installation.

• PLEASE leave all settings at default except Teatimer (make sure you uncheck the option during installation)!! It can be a resource hog and also makes removal of certain problems more difficult. If you already have Teatimer enabled, see this to disable it: How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer
• Make sure you leave the SDhelper ( IE bad download blocker) checked to install (this is the default).
• During the install, do the search for updates now and get any updates. Also do the recommended registry backup. If you have a problem automatically installing the update due to no internet connection or other reason, you can skip the update during installation and then manually download and install the update from here: Spybot Search and Destroy Update
• If you get an error message about bad checksum when trying to update, just choose a different server location.
• Also look for the Immunize feature in Spybot and use it. First click in the left column on the Immunize icon and it will check to see what needs to be immunize. After it completes, leave the default settings and click on the green plus sign at the top that says Immunize and this will activate the immunizations.
• On the top menu, click Mode and select Advanced mode. Then expand the Settings selection by clicking the little + sign next to the Settings selection. Then select Ignore Cookies. You can either Ignore all cookies or you can selectively decide which ones you want to keep to avoid loosing settings for various websites. Either way cookies are of no major concern to us. They can just make logs unnecessarily longer since many scanners will report them as a problem. Now click the Spybot-S&D selection towads the top so you leave this submenu.
• Now Shut down ALL unrequired applications including browsers.
• Now click the Check for problems button which will start the scan. Be patient, this can take a while to run. Progress will be shown in the status bar at the bottom of the window. What is being list in the bottom is only what it is currently searching for. It is not an indicator of an infection. DO NOT RUN any other scans while this is running.
• When the scan completes make sure you select everything and then click Fix selected problems on the top menu bar.

NOTE: Anytime you install updates for Spybot, check for new Immunizations by doing the above step.
