    Hey all.

Trying to help setup some internet security for a person who has recently acquired a second-hand PC running Windows 98. After trying a couple of other free firewalls, we "seem" to have settled on Outpost from Agnitum.

What might be the best-bet(s) for good (dependable) FREE(ware) Anti-Spy & AV programs for an older PC/OS such as this? I am (we are) mostly concerned with potential (and dreaded) "COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS/ISSUES", and the thing not working after downloads of said security programs. This woman does have "high-speed" (cable-modem), but it's the lower-tiered type, the least expensive she could get from her ISP - she has two teenagers who she wanted to provide quicker service/results for, for homework and such, and as a final note, she receives NO (-0-) child-support from the ex.

Any other "98" advice/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as anything I might have recalled from (about) this OS was lost years ago.

    Any takers??

    THX in advance! - g ....

Two good anti-virus programs for W98, I used AVG most of the time and had no problems.

    AVG AntiVirus http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Free_Edition_d886.html

    Avast http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html

Disk defragment on W98 is not too good, here is a great alternative.

    Diskeeper Lite http://www.majorgeeks.com/Diskeeper_Lite_d1207.html

Also. There are a bunch of Freeware programs here http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 for everything and alot of them run on W98. Just sort thru them and ask any question if you need help/advice.

Look for an older version of Zone Alarm on an old computer magazine cd. It usually appeared in the essential utilities or similar section. Try the local library.

Check out www.oldversion.com for lots of older versions of programs. Great resource to find that old stuff.:major

Just an example, using Zone Alarm.

Hope this helps. Bookmark it.:D Bazza

Thank you all very much - it appears that I may need to dig a bit deeper though.

I am coming to you via a Firefox Browser - partially due to the fact that this Windows 98 OS is having problems with it's IE (various error messages ["runtime", etc., "script"/"syntax", and freeze-ups]) - to the point that I cannot even get any help at/from microsoft.com -- have to be running some version of IE to get help there and they do not/can not (will not?) "recognize" Mozilla/Firefox.

    Any suggestions ... ("please"!)

    Thx in advance,

The runtime error could be a sub seven virus- if you can run a virus scan, you might solve it.

I could get to the link of help from microsoft with firefox, so you should be able to.
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cwin98

I know a lot of other Microsoft links will not connect with firefox, as I have tried at various times, but this on is o.k.
If you have the Windows 98 disk, a repair (go to the link) could fix I.E

You folks are great, you really are. As I've tried all the suggestions here, I think my next step is to retrieve a Windows 98 "Recovery" (I suppose?) disk(ette ...floppy) that I have (of course, located an hour-and-a-half from here, where I am trying to help this friend).

More "background" & a QUESTION: When the computer was obtained (again, second-hand), it was said to "work fine" (able to access the internet, etc), HOWEVER there was a problem receiving/retrieving mail (email from OE, I assume) ~*Question*~ If I am ("occasionally") getting a blue-screen termination notice that the system is shutting-down due to some sort of OE problem/issue/error - "could" a problem (any problem) with OE cause conflict(s) or a problem(s) with IE functioning properly?

    Thanks again, and as always!
