i ran housecall and found a fp ms07 043 and ms 07-046. but these are security window updates??
i ran avg and found zip all and the same with spy bot. will run avg anti spyware.

I tend to doubt this is malware especially if you are fixing the problem by rebooting your cable modem. Here are some questions to answer:
    • What Windows operating system do you use?
    • Do you have a router inbetween your cable modem and your PC?
    • Is your PC setup to obtain its IP address and DNS server address automatically?
    • Do you use a software firewall? If so, which one? If not, why not?
    • Next time you have this problem, instead of rebooting the cable modem, try the below
      • click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window (if using Win9x or ME, use command instead of cmd )
      • In the command prompt window enter the below sequence of commands each follow by the enter key
        • ipconfig /flushdns
        • ipconfig /release
        • ipconfig /renew
    • Does running the above commands fix your problem without having to reboot the cable modem?

    xp is what i'm using
    no router
has healing software which doesn't do the trick
use zonealarm firewall set to high
have tried cmd. but the tech support didn't suggest the code u supplied.
so next time it happens i'll try your code .. beats rebooting.

Consider getting one for the added level of security.

This does not answer my question which was:
You need to look at your Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) Properties and see how your PC is configured.

yup tcp/ip is set to obtain ip address automatically.
i lost the dns this afternoon and instead of rebooting i used your ipconfig commands and it set up the dns again. thanks. i was under the impression that a router wasn't necessary unless one uses wireless? is that not so?

any more help on getting things to run smoothly would be useful and appreciated. thanks.

That only answers the first part of my question.

It depends on your definition of necessary. Is it necessary for your setup to work..... obviously not especially if you only have one PC. Is it better for security purposes..... absolutely!

I'm not sure what you are referring too. If you wish to check whether your PC has malware problems, follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME sticky thread.
